The Transportation Planning Technician 2 supports the planning of local and regional transportation within the City of Burnaby, including planning for improved walking, cycling, transit, and goods movement. The position also supports the analysis and review of transportation policy and program initiatives related to citywide and regional strategies. The position reports directly to the Transportation Planner and works closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, and technical staff within the Transportation Division in the Engineering Department and across other City departments. Job responsibilities include: 1) Supporting transportation planning for the City of Burnaby to meet the needs of residents and businesses at a citywide, community, and corridor level and advances specific projects with a focus on sustainable and active transportation; 2) Conducting data analysis, modelling, and associated reporting of the transportation network; 3) Demonstrating knowledge on emerging transportation planning trends and guidelines; 4) Assisting in the preparation of Council reports and technical presentations to the public and external agencies; 5) Participating in public engagement events related to transportation projects or policies; 6) Preparing conceptual designs and related cost estimates; 7) Supporting coordination efforts within Transportation Division as well as with other City departments.

Job requirements and qualifications include: 1) Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by advanced technical courses, computer-aided design, and transportation planning courses or an equivalent combination of training and work experience (completion of university-level planning courses or degrees is preferred); 2) Sound knowledge of engineering best practices, design principles, and theories related to transportation and transit systems; 3) Working knowledge of City bylaws, transportation policies, infrastructure development processes, and policy development processes; 4) Strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to anticipate and manage multiple interacting and technically complex issues; 5) Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills; 6) Strong conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation skills; 7) Ability to consider a range of interests, including those of local residents, community groups, and other stakeholders; 8) Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; 9) Proficiency in the use of geospatial analyses software such as ArcGIS; 10) Proficiency in the use of visual design software such as Adobe Creative Suite to communicate complex planning issues and present data-driven solutions; 11) Experience in stakeholder and public engagement; 12) Experience in the planning and design of local to regional transportation and transit projects; 13) Ability to develop databases and collect, analyze and interpret statistical and narrative data; 14) A valid Class 5 driver's licence for the Province of British Columbia.
