Transportation \xe2\x80\x93 Engineering Technician (1 Continuous) Engineering & Public Works Department
POSITION FUNCTION Perform research, analyses and review functions related to transportation planning, operation and design.
KEY DUTIES Design and produce drawings related to the municipal infrastructure using computer aided drafting; collect field data for the production of engineering drawings and plans; produce cost estimates; monitor job costs and verify expenditures; review base plans by conducting field checks to ensure accuracy and completeness; maintain manual and computerized records and databases, files, plans, base maps, and systems models; assist in the production, and updating of related engineering drawings, maps, and statistical reports.
Apply the principles of project management on construction projects; liaise with other departments and outside agencies as required; conduct inspections of construction sites to ensure design, specifications and safety standards are met.
Respond to enquiries and complaints from the public, outside agencies and other departments in person, by phone, and in writing; liaise with and provide technical information and advice on transportation issues to staff, consultants and outside agencies regarding design requirements, pedestrian flow, cycling, traffic movement, on-street regulations, and bylaws.
Review rezoning and development permit applications, building permit applications, and utility and sign permit applications for compliance and functionality; review engineering designs to ensure compliance with City standards and specifications; provide technical advice and interpretation to applicants, contractors and professional consultants on design submissions and advise on required changes. Review and approve street occupancy permits; conduct site inspections to review the work of City crews and contractors to ensure compliance.
Research, investigate, analyze and recommend solutions on transportation safety, design, and operations issues, including collisions trends and occurrences for all transportation modes. Perform field investigations and calculations regarding transportation infrastructure safety, design and operations; calculate land design issues such as road grades, loading for traffic signal poles, sight and stopping sight distances, rainwater flow, and road drainage.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE Work is generated by requests from the public and permit applications; projects are performed according to annual construction schedule or assigned by supervisor. Work is reviewed upon completion.
Issues such as schedule changes and final design are discussed with Supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES Organize and prioritize work. Understand and apply the principles and techniques of civil engineering planning, design, estimating, project co-ordination and construction. Working level operation of current City word processing, spreadsheet and related specialty software such as CAD and engineering software. Maintain accurate records. Produce civil engineering technical drawings for municipal roads and utility construction using manual and computer aided drafting techniques. Read and interpret engineering codes, standards and drawings. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies. Work safely on job sites.
QUALIFICATIONS Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification: Technical School Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology. (2 years) Traffic Control Certification. (16 hrs) Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver\'s Licence. Experience: 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER: May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 35 hour work week $40.30 per hour, Pay Grade 11 Job Code #4345 This is a CUPE Local 50 Position
