Position Overview The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Software Engineer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. Reporting to the Principal Investigator. The Senior Software Engineer will be a key member of the Data Intelligence for Health (DIH) Lab (https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/dih), and oversee and lead the technical development and maintenance of various software systems, tools, and platforms, including a high-performance computing cluster. The Senior Software Engineer's responsibilities will also include quality assurance, stakeholder/end-user engagement, product and project management, and software documentation. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Software Engineering/Data Science
  • Lead technical development and maintenance of software tools, systems, and platforms for various research projects at DIH
  • Perform full-stack software development and deployment
  • Manage and version control source code
  • Create and maintain meticulous software documentation
  • Plan, manage, and track technical tasks
  • Create, maintain, and analyze large-scale databases
  • Support publications and presentations of research findings, as well as commercialization activities as needed
  • Interact directly with end-users and stakeholders, as appropriate, to incorporate their needs
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in computer science, software engineering, or a relevant field
  • At least 3 years of work experience in software engineering including full-stack development
  • Experience in architecting and developing scalable software systems in a modular fashion
  • Experience in development and maintenance of a high-performance computing cluster
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Bash, HTML/CSS, SQL, MongoDB, Objective C, Swift, C++, and Docker
  • Advanced proficiency in GitHub
  • Extensive experience with RESTful APIs
  • Experience with cloud computing service providers (e.g., Azure, GCP, AWS, Compute Canada)
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate existing software and services to achieve desired objectives
  • Strong organizational and software project/product management skills with attention to detail
  • Well-developed written/spoken communication and teamwork skills
  • Understanding of application and data security
  • Experience with mobile programming and device management software
  • Research experience in an academic environment
  • General knowledge in health, nutrition, and marketing
