Position Overview The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. Reporting to the Principal Investigator. The Senior Machine Learning Engineer will be a key member of the Data Intelligence for Health (DIH) Lab (https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/dih) and lead the machine learning work in several research projects with the goal of deploying the developed machine learning models in the real world. This position will also involve the development of a software platform for machine learning development and deployment. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop production-level prediction models for real-world deployment using complex large-scale data and advanced machine learning methods
  • Develop a machine learning software platform to support development and deployment\
  • Engage with other researchers, stakeholders, and end-users to understand and incorporate their needs into machine learning-based technology
  • Organize and curate related data assets and trained machine learning models
  • Meticulously develop and document source code
  • Support publications and presentations of research findings, as well as commercialization activities, as needed
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in machine learning, data science, computer science, biomedical/electrical/computer/software engineering, or a relevant field
  • At least 3 years of machine learning experience in academia and/or industry
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of supervised, unsupervised, deep learning, and natural language processing methods
  • Advanced Python proficiency in conducting data science and machine learning using scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, NumPy, pandas, NLTK, etc.
  • Extensive experience with high-performance computing including using GPUs for deep learning
  • Experience with real-world deployment of machine learning-based technology
  • Advanced proficiency in GitHub
  • Advanced proficiency in database technologies such as SQL and MongoDB
  • Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written/spoken communication and teamwork skills
  • Health research experience in an academic setting
  • Understanding of health information systems
  • Proficiency in data/information visualization
