Position Overview The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The Research Associate will report to the Associate Director, Operations. The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute has launched a research initiative called ACTION (the Alberta Cellular Therapy and Immune Oncology Research Initiative). ACTION is an ecosystem of interconnected research enablers designed to facilitate translational research of cellular therapies for cancer. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop, optimize and utilize novel approaches to facilitate intravital imaging of the host immune response within the tumour microenvironment. Work collaboratively to develop new animal models of cancer and immunomodulation based on data from clinical studies
  • Expand intravital imaging approaches to other ex vivo models (explants, perfused tissues, organoids). Work collaboratively with other Research Associates within ACTION to achieve shared goals
  • Establish new intravital imaging approaches, labeling methods, fluorescent probes and other immune reporter systems for use in vivo
  • Work collaboratively with multiple Principal Investigators and their teams on diverse projects related to engineered immune cell therapy
  • Co-supervise and train students and postdocs within the ACTION program
  • Analyze experimental data and report it to supervisor (Jenne) and the ACTION team
  • Efficiently obtain necessary approvals and resources from other University of Calgary units and facilities to successfully advance project
  • Present (via poster and / or oral presentation) research at local, national, and international meetings
  • Contribute to data assembly for and co-lead writing of scientific manuscripts and grants
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
  • Identify and pursue national and international research and development opportunities
  • Develops operating procedures, safety protocols, and makes recommendations on workflow improvements
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • PhD degree in immunology or virology required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a post-doctoral fellow, in intravital imaging and cancer immunology is required
  • Significant experience assessing immune responses via intravital imaging techniques is required
  • Significant experience in cell culture, organotypic culture, flow cytometry, flow virometry, ELISA, bioluminescence imaging, and small animal experimentation techniques is required
  • Strong publication record, including first or senior authored manuscripts published within the last 3 years required
  • Experience orally presenting research at scientific conferences, within the last 5 years is required
  • Experience training PhD Students or post-doctoral fellows in intravital microscopy techniques is required
  • Experience working at the University of Calgary and familiarity with the University systems (e.g., IRISS) and facilities (e.g., Health Sciences Animal Research Center) is required
  • Previous experience developing and leading an intravital imaging program is required
  • Detail oriented, organized, and strong written communication skills
  • Understanding of statistical packages for data analysis, interrogation, and interpretation
  • Proven ability to work in a team setting, as evidenced by a track record of collaborative publication
