Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

This position will play a critical and dynamic role in coordinating, conducting, and reporting research that explores the role of social and structural vulnerabilities on health.

The program of research includes a number of distinct projects. The successful candidate in this position will be involved in all aspects of these study components. The Research Associate will contribute to these research projects including: progress reporting, the submission and maintenance of ethics applications, recruiting and consenting participants, conducting qualitative focus groups and interviews with patients and providers, and analyzing primary data. Academic and manuscript writing, in particular for submission to peer- reviewed journals, is also a part of the role. The successful candidate is responsible for ensuring that deliverables are completed on time and on budget, as identified in the project plan and in compliance with the Terms and Conditions for the research award, the HIA, regulatory, and applicable ethical research requirements for research involving human subjects.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Implement study protocol, monitors daily study activity and updates investigators as appropriate.
  • Manage, monitor and report on project timelines, milestones and deliverables.
  • Ensure that all research related activities are carried out in accordance with the established protocol and standards in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies.
  • Manage research protocols in preparation for IRB submission and prepare submissions to applicable ethics boards.
  • Maintain ongoing Ethics renewals, communication and reporting.
  • Ensure project adheres to ethical and privacy requirements, including regular audit of performance.
  • Organize qualitative research (ie: focus groups, interviews, and data collection) inclusive of planning, moderating, facilitating, collecting and sorting information, entering data, and data analysis.
  • Complete informed consent process with study participants.
  • Responsible for monitoring expected enrolment goals and modifying recruitment strategies to achieve those targets.
  • Oversee the administration of the study (developing study data collection forms, creating and maintaining a Master File, paying invoices, sourcing vendors, etc.)
  • Assist with the development of materials, and supporting resources for the implementation and evaluation of the research activities.
  • Write research papers suitable for publication
  • Manage and track incoming / outgoing study correspondence and follows-up in appropriate and timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members and external parties
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A minimum of a master's degree in a related field such as Community Health Sciences, Public Health, Public Policy, Social Work, Nursing etc..
  • A developed depth and breadth of understanding regarding social determinants of health.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience conducting and coordinating quantitative and qualitative research experience is required.
  • Experience with academic writing is required.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to seek out answers to questions and problems.
  • Demonstrated ability in preparing reports and conducting literature reviews for the purpose of presentation and publication.
  • Qualitative research experience is strongly preferred: including conducting focus groups and/or interviews with patients and health care providers, analyzing qualitative interview transcripts using thematic analysis techniques. (preference for those who have used NVivo Qualitative Data Analysis Software).
  • Skills in statistical analysis and software programs (e.g. STATA) is an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Expert knowledge of standard system software applications (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc)
