Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.
Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.
Your role

CBC News has two rare and exciting opportunities to join the network as Senior Reporters with the general assignment team based in Toronto.
As a Senior Reporter, you are responsible for covering the top stories in the country for national radio and television news programs, as well as digital publishing and streaming platforms. You will be pitching stories daily that resonate with a national audience and reflect the wide range of voices and perspectives in communities across the Greater Toronto Area. You follow international news closely and must also be comfortable covering global stories from a domestic perspective.
These reporters are often called upon to cover live and breaking news, so a high level of live reporting skill is key to the job. So too is a willingness and ability to be deployed to cover stories elsewhere in the country and around the world, as needed.
Reporters with CBC News work with a lot of people in the network - from assignment editors, to field producers and videographers, to the programs they are delivering stories to - so we are looking for someone who values teamwork and is collaborative. It is also crucial to be calm under pressure and comfortable with tight deadlines.
Both in your reporting and in the workplace, you model inclusivity and respect for differing viewpoints. These values are really important to us, so they must be for you, too.
Please note: These positions can involve long hours and may also involve extended assignments away from Toronto on short notice. And each of these positions could require working at least one weekend day per week.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • 7 years of comparable or relevant work experience.

  • A track record in field journalism.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of - and connection to - a wide range of underrepresented communities across the Greater Toronto Area.

  • Excellent pitching, reporting and analytical skills.

  • Memorable writing for radio, TV and digital.

  • Proven interviewing skills in a number of different scenarios.

  • Strong presentation skills and authentic on-air personality.

  • Excellent grasp of both regional and national affairs, with in-depth knowledge and understanding of GTA stories.

  • Experience working on multiple projects or stories simultaneously.

  • Clear communication and a spirit of congeniality and collaboration.

  • An understanding of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.

  • Skill in using key CBC News production tools (or equivalent) is preferred:

    • DTV

    • Media Central and Assist functions

    • Flip Factory

    • Amnet VOD services

    • iNews

    • Google suite of products (Gmail, Meet, Docs/Sheets, etc.)

    • Audio editing tools such as Dalet/Adobe audition

    • Field technologies including FTP and Dejero

    • Digital publishing tools including Polopoly
Please provide a demo reel which is no longer than 15 minutes and includes the following elements:

  • Packaged news reports for television and radio;

  • Live reports for television and radio;

  • Two digital stories that you have written.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

If this sounds interesting, please click on ''Apply online''. We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
