The CBC's Parliamentary Bureau in Ottawa is looking for a senior writer to join the team. Your primary responsibility will be to our mobile and digital platforms. This position calls for a writer who will create news content in keeping with the tone and voice of http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics.

You must have the panache and self-confidence to bring our programming to life. You understand Canadians' need to connect with us in their homes and cars, on their computers and mobile devices. You think on your feet and aspire to inform, enlighten and engage our audiences.

The writer will work on breaking and developing news and a variety of stories and content. This content will appear throughout the day, and carry across platforms. The successful candidate must be able to create and coordinate digital news content and add relevant multimedia and social media material to stories to enhance their value to the audience. The writer is a key member of the editorial team.

Your primary responsibilities will include ensuring the bureau's digital report is ahead of developing news by researching and writing stories, editing and packaging work produced by bureau reporters and covering breaking news on a minute-by-minute basis.

This is a full time permanent position which we expect to be scheduled Monday through Friday, 1 pm to 9:15 pm, but is subject to change based on operational needs.

Your Role

Gathers news, verifies information, generates story ideas and writes material for publication on the CBC News website. Demonstrates and maintains exception skill in writing headline news stories following CBCNews.ca style to tight deadlines. Work adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected. Work can involve the coordination of the activities of others and close cooperation with other journalists is essential.

Key Tasks:

Gathers information on issues and events of regional and/or national significance, from a variety of sources.

Writes material for publication on the CBC News website; describes issues and events in a clear and concise manner to a national audience.

Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.

Coordinates the exchange of program material and scheduling of live video streams.

Ensures all text conforms to standard English grammar and CBCNews.ca style, including proper spellings and capitalization.

Writes following the best practices of online news including SEO.

Helps to manage the daily news file and the Politics story lineup.

As required, performs the following tasks:

Organize and coordinate digital news content.

Edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for the CBC News website using appropriate technologies.

Add relevant material to stories to enhance their value to the audience, including photos, maps, charts, multimedia and social media content.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A university degree in journalism or equivalent and a minimum of five years of relevant experience including proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.

A distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich our digital (politics) coverage.

Experience covering Parliament Hill and federal politics.

Solid understanding of politics and public policy.

Experience writing for mobile, digital or print news is required.

Demonstrated solid news judgement.

Cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Ideas and strategies that will broaden and grow audiences and define CBC News as the innovative digital news leader in Canada.

Experience with headline writing and vetting (for all platforms), copy editing, SEO.

Must be thoroughly familiar with and understand CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Experience using iNews, Media Central, VizRt, iNews, Polopoly.

Experience publishing to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and a solid command of social media management systems like TweetDeck.

Available to work different shifts and overtime as required.

Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.

Valid driver's license and passport.
