Your role

The Senior Manager of Operations, reporting to the Senior Managing Director of the Ontario region, is a key leader in the station, supporting the ability of staff to do their best work. This person works closely with the people who work in the Parliamentary Bureau and the local team at CBC Ottawa to ensure each person has the tools and set up required to excel. To do this work, the Senior Manager of Operations maintains relationships with people in Ottawa and across the country in a wide range of departments including technical, human resources, real estate, etc. We take pride in our spirit of collaboration. Tasks:

Ensures new staff are welcomed and given the tools they need to begin work, including technical supports and an introduction to CBC administrative systems.

Works in partnership with editorial leadership to support the journalists and producers as they deliver high quality, multi-platform programming and content that meets established strategic priorities.

Ensures teams have technical equipment required to support programming and newsgathering as required.

Responsible for contracting freelancers and supporting their work with CBC.

Oversees budgets required to support the needs of staff in the Parliamentary and local bureaus, including purchasing equipment, supplies, etc.

Ensures quality control for programs and storytelling, following up on any issues that affect the look or sound of the content we produce.

Responds as needed to provide on the ground support when major events require additional coverage, tools and staff.

Provides on-site support as a first point of contact and information regarding HR issues.

Communicates with staff as required to convey key messages and changes that will affect them.

Makes meaningful contributions to the work of the CBC News Division including the work of the Ontario leadership team as well as network partners across the division.

Provides technical support to the teams in other Ontario stations as needed.

Keeps up-to-date on new technology and work methods in the video streaming, digital/mobile, radio and television broadcast industry.

Review and revise workflows to adapt to new technological tools and storytelling formats and develop training plans to support change.

Acts as the primary liaison with real estate and building management teams to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment.

Leads and builds a culture that prioritizes operational risk assessments and health and safety with staff assignment.

Works with management, human resources and union representatives on various projects, committees, labour disputes and contingency plans.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Strong strategic, leadership, communication and management skills.

Demonstrated experience leading change and project management.

Ability to lead and champion employee well being and health and safety.

Able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously with very tight deadlines.

Able to analyze complex situations, systems and relationships.

Willing to travel as needed.

Collaborative leadership style.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to speak, read and write effectively in French is a requirement for this position.

A deep commitment to public broadcasting and the audiences we serve.

Empathy and an ability to build relationships with a wide range of people.

An interest in journalism, daily news and storytelling.

Flexibility, creativity and a willingness to contribute in whatever way is needed to best serve audience needs.

A sense of humour.
