Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.
Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.
Your role

With climate change taking centre stage and climate crises emerging globally, CBC News is committed to leading coverage on one of biggest stories of our time. As part of that commitment, we are looking for an experienced field journalist to become our first International Climate Producer.
In this role, you will be working closely with our newly appointed International Climate Correspondent to plan and execute our climate coverage - from story selection to deployment plans to production. You’ll be expected to pitch and produce both original news angles and in-depth stories, and respond to major climate news developments in Canada and internationally. So a solid understanding of climate science and an ability to translate it for everyday audiences are key to this role. The successful candidate will also bring an understanding of how important diversity of perspective and constructive journalism are to our climate change coverage.
You are a creative thinker, with ideas for innovative storytelling treatments and formats that can engage new audiences on multiple platforms - digital video and audio, radio and TV, plus written files for online. Behind the scenes, this is a highly collaborative role; besides working alongside the International Climate Correspondent, you will coordinate with multiple news and current affairs teams also covering this important issue. Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills and an ability to remain calm under pressure and deadlines will be a real asset here.
This position is Toronto-based, but will involve extended assignments in other parts of Canada and the world, sometimes on short notice. It reports to the Executive Producer of World News.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience combined with strong editorial judgment.

  • A demonstrated understanding of climate change and environmental science and an ability to craft stories about climate issues in a way that resonates with audiences.

  • A proven ability to seek out multiple and diverse perspectives and ensure they are included in stories you produce.

  • An ability to plan, coordinate and execute live or packaged reports for radio and television and craft stories for CBC digital platforms.

  • A willingness and drive to innovate in the way we tell stories.

  • Ability to set priorities, plan and meet deadlines under sometimes challenging circumstances. Adept at navigating competing demands from many different directions and delivering successfully.

  • Clear communication and a spirit of congeniality and collaboration.

  • An understanding of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.

  • Skill in using key CBC News production tools (or equivalent) is preferred:

    • DTV

    • Media Central and Assist functions

    • Flip Factory

    • Amnet VOD services

    • iNews

    • Google suite of products (Gmail, Meet, Docs/Sheets, etc.)

    • Audio editing tools such as Dalet/Adobe audition

    • Field technologies including FTP and Dejero

    • Digital publishing tools including Polopoly

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
