Job Description

Reporting to the Controller, and working closely with members of our operations teams, the Senior Accountant has primary responsibility for daily operational accounting transactions, coordinating Canadian and US payrolls with outsourced payroll providers, as well as maintenance of monthly general ledger accounting entries. The Senior Accountant will be an integral part of the monthly financial statement close process and will support the Controller closely in this regard, including developing and implementing efficient and effective processes and procedures. The Senior Accountant position is broad and diverse and will appeal to a candidate who has both strong technical accounting and financial systems skills, and who demonstrates creativity. The candidate will have an ability to pivot to differing priorities quickly and will desire diversity and the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills. Duties and Responsibilities:The specific duties and responsibilities of the Senior Accountant are as follows (such duties and responsibilities being subject to amendment or other changes as determined by the Controller on an ongoing basis):

  • Maintain General Ledger accounts for multiple companies, including preparation of supporting schedules and adjusting journal entries for several more complex accounts.
  • Working with external payroll provider, prepare US and Canadian payrolls twice per month.
  • Record and coordinate payment of vendor invoices for multiple companies.
  • Produce account reconciliations and support the Controller with closing the general ledger for multiple companies.
  • Provide Controller with supplementary financial information for monthly reporting to Ownership group.
  • Prepare and file monthly and quarterly Canadian and US commodity tax returns for multiple companies.
  • Support the Controller and the Corporate Finance team to complete the annual external audit process.
  • With the IT Department and consultants, support Corporate Finance team with the continuing enhancement of the Sage Intacct ERP system.
  • Post cash receipts and prepare bank reconciliations for multiple companies and bank accounts.
  • Other duties as assigned, particularly directed at scaling up and growth of the Company.
Qualifications:Education, Experience & Security:
  • Minimum of a university degree in Accounting, Finance or Financial Management
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in finance and accounting, preferably within a small company that required the incumbent to deal with multiple aspects of a Finance function.
  • Accounting designation is preferred but is not required.
  • Public accounting experience is helpful.
  • A strong data driven decision maker.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, as well as good working knowledge of financial process and control design and implementation; and
  • Must pass screening results for general and criminal background checks and credit history on an ongoing basis.
Skills and Abilities:
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems and processes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent tact, and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy; and
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under the pressure of tight deadlines.
