SALARY: $53,456 to $74,776 per year (Pay Band 4) (Based on 37.5 hours per week)

JOB PURPOSE:

The Research Nurse provides study coordination, study administration and study patient care in support of specified health research programs. This includes the screening, recruitment, care, and treatment of research subjects, and collection and analysis of research data in accordance with the established study protocol and applicable regulations. The Research Nurse ensures adherence to hospital/departmental policies and established clinical procedures, standards, and practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Nursing degree required
  • At least two (2) years of clinical research experience preferred
  • At least two (2) years of nursing experience in the relevant clinical field (e.g. hematology/oncology)
  • Experience with patient recruitment and data collection
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience in preparing clinical study submissions for review
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working within a multidisciplinary team and/or framework
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Good work record.
  • Written and spoken competence in English is required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Organizing and coordinating skills
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of clinical research
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards
  • Ability to recruit, evaluate, and instruct clinical research subjects
  • Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, establish project timelines and track multiple deliverables
  • Ability to design and implement systems necessary in the collection, maintenance and analysis of data
  • Demonstrated experience in working within a multidisciplinary team and/or framework
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and clinical trials software
  • Knowledge of TCPS2, Health Canada, ICH-GCP Guidelines and other legislation/standards pertaining to research
  • Willingness to learn new skills as required by the position
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Study Planning and Coordination (20%)
  • Participates in initial review and assessment of a study protocol to determine study feasibility;
  • Assists with the planning, development, and implementation of research protocols;
  • Prepares study submissions for methodological, regulatory and ethical review;
Study Administration (50%)
  • Oversees the planning, scheduling, and implementation of day-to-day research activities and procedures, ensuring efficient workflow and adequate care and treatment of research subjects;
  • Plans and carries out programs for the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of clinical research subjects;
  • Coordinates and monitors the collection, processing, and recording of research data and/or specimen samples, as required by study protocol;
  • Maintains complete source documentation and completes subject's case report forms as required;
  • Provides administrative coordination between investigators and ancillary departments, research subjects, sponsoring organizations, and/or regulating bodies;
  • May oversee and guide the work of other research nurses, coordinators and/or support staff engaged in study activities;
Study Subject Care (30%)
  • Obtains informed consent and medical history of study patients;
  • Responds to study patient inquiries and acts as the initial point of contact for the study;
  • Administers prescribed study medications, performs venipuncture and may be required to start intravenous lines;
  • Monitors vital signs, and/or performs other specialized nursing procedures as appropriate to the specific needs of the study and individual subjects, such as assisting with bone marrow aspiration;
  • Performs advanced nursing assessments, as required, such as assessing patients physical and psychosocial needs by completing patient evaluations;
  • Records patient response to treatment and reports significant findings to the investigator;
  • Performs follow-up of all adverse events and serious adverse events and reports as required;
