Compensation Range $5,365.42 - $7,709.92 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
Dr. Poul Sorensen is an internationally renowned expert in the biology and genetics of high-risk childhood solid tumours. He has assembled an interdisciplinary team leading state-of-the art research projects focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying the adaptation of pediatric cancer cells to harsh tumor microenvironment conditions, in addition to leading the identification of novel therapeutic targets. The Sorensen team is looking for a Research Manager to work side-by-side with our scientists and project team in planning, writing, and executing grants and projects. Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Senior Research Project Manager. The Research Manager will join a team of interdisciplinary scientists, including the Sorensen team composed of approximately 20 lab members, in addition to local and international collaborators to facilitate project progression and timely completion. The Research Manager will also serve as a contact for internal and external stakeholders to the University: Research Ethics Board, Institutional Review Boards, finance offices at UBC and at the Health Authorities: University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO) at UBC, BC Cancer Technology Development Office (TDO), Offices of Research Services (ORS) and Administration (ORA), and grant funding agencies.
Work Performed

  • Planning and facilitating grant proposals
  • Facilitating internal and external grant submission process
  • Managing grant finances including budget forecasting, preparing comprehensive financial reports and statements, resolves discrepancies and directs the transfer of funds as necessary
  • Writing and completing ethics applications, annual renewals, and study protocol amendments
  • Coordinating and preparing progress and end-of-grant reports for funding agencies
  • Facilitating industry/grant contracts and material/data transfer agreements in collaboration with institutional contract offices
  • Facilitate scheduling of meeting with local and international collaborators.
  • Developing processes and systems to support grant application processes for operational efficiency
  • Liaising with communications team to promote latest research findings and novel research; and writing highlights for internal newsletters and other publications for both an internal and external audience
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgement are required for this position. The individual will need to exercise independent judgement, feel comfortable working with a large and diverse team, and conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner at all times. Any errors may seriously impact the reputation of the Faculty and University, compromising research credibility and potential loss in research funding.
Supervision Received
Required to work independently on a day-to-day basis according to broadly established guidelines. The individual reports directly to the Senior Research Project Manager. The individual is required to interact with individual faculty members as part of specific grants and projects.
Supervision Given
The Research Manager is not responsible for the management of any staff; however, they may be required to formally train and orient new staff, and students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MSc or PhD in biomedical research, preferred.
  • Exceptional communication and writing skills, organizational skills, ability to multitask, and good computer proficiency is required (i.e. MSWord, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, etc.) Ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects/tasks as well as multiple deadlines, prioritize effectively and adapt quickly and efficiently to change.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve them.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to gather, record, and organize information; to create and maintain record and filing systems.
  • Ability to receive and act on constructive feedback.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Ability to write in clear, concise business and academic English.
  • Knowledge and experience with grant application procedures and granting agency requirements, scientific terminology and research methodology in the health sector.
