In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The Research Manager plays a key role in enhancing SCBC\'s research through the development of strategic plans and the oversight of all research activities within SportsCardiologyBC. Working closely with the Director of Operations and Research Directors, they are responsible for supervising all grant and ethics applications for division members. Additionally, they serve as the primary resource liaison for all members on matters related to research policies, procedures, and contracts.
Organizational Status
The Research Manager will:
Report to the Director of Operations
Attend weekly meetings and other meetings as needed with the Director of Operations, Research Directors and division members
Interact closely with PIs (Principal Investigators) and other partners with regards to research activities
Interact closely with other staff at SportsCardiologyBC with regards to research activities
Interact with members of relevant UBC departments and facilities, including the Faculty of Medicine Office of Research Services, and Financial Services
Interact with funding agencies, decision-makers, university personnel, and community agencies
Work Performed
Research Support:
In collaboration with the Director of Operations and Research Director, develops a strategic plan to drive research productivity and competitiveness at SCBC
Manages all research activities including research orientation, study design, protocol development, database design, collection and analysis
Develops and implements internal processes for grant applications and follow up
Drafts forecasts for project budgets, research grants and grant applications
Coordinates with granting agencies, research institutes, and centers to address issues related to policies and procedures concerning current research funding opportunities
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Lab testing including quality assurance, protocol generation and maintenance
Develops the quarterly Newsletter and other research reports
Ethics Facilitation:
Develops ethics applications for both Human and Animal studies in collaboration with PIs and Research Managers
Advises Research Director on requirements for ethics and operational approvals based on site and level of complexity of the study
Resolves questions and issues related to ethics approval process at UBC and health authorities
Works closely with the Department\'s Research Manager to address issues brought forward by division members and staff
Provides advice to team members for ethics approval
Grant Facilitation:
Identifies appropriate funding opportunities for PIs and advises PIs on application requirements and deadlines. Maintains in-depth knowledge and understanding of researchers and research programs
Drafts grant applications for granting agencies and writes scientific aspects of grant applications as needed
Answers all research related enquiries of PIs
Maintains up-to-date knowledge relevant to grant applications to ensure that researcher grant applications and budgets meet all grant funding agency, Department, Faculty of Medicine, and UBC requirements
Provides leadership as the resource liaison to all team members in supporting grant and ethics applications
Ensures faculty members meet their deadlines for operating and salary grants
Ensures ethical standards of research are followed
Performs other related duties as required
Statistics:
Conducts analysis, and prepares statistics on relevant research grant information
Creates and maintains publication metrics
Presents and explains statistics to team members
Performs other related duties as required
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Manager will be responsible for coordination and management of all day-to-day activities related to supporting PIs applying for ethics, research grants and grant facilitations. Poor decisions could delay the timely completion of the applications or be damaging to the reputation, and cause financial loss to, the Pl, the Division, UBC and other institutions affiliated with the project(s).
Supervision Received
For the most part the Research Manager will work independently and will receive direction, as necessary, from the Research Director.
Supervision Given
This position will provide mentorship and guidance on prioritization of tasks to meet internal and external deadlines. The position will also supervise and assist support staff, research staff and work study students as needed to ensure that the research grant and ethics applications are prepared and executed in a timely and efficient manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree or higher preferred. Strong experience with CPET. Experience in conducting/supporting research. Experience in technical writing required. Experience in human resource management is preferred. Experience with UBC financial systems preferred. Experience in office administration in a research area at UBC preferred. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Detailed knowledge of UBC grant and ethics application preparation. Knowledge of research institutes and how they relate to each other and to UBC.
Knowledge of conflict of interest and conflict of commitment is an asset. Financial skills with the ability to effectively use Excel at an advanced level. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to exercise initiative, diplomacy, tact, and discretion. Proficient and comfortable using a range of software for desktop publishing, website design and database/accounts administration, and in variety of operating systems. Ability to analyze problems, identifies key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to identify, obtain, and effectively manage organizational resources. Excellent written and verbal English. Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to work with others in a team environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work a flexible schedule including early morning and evening meetings/events as required.
