Position Overview

The Hotchkiss Brain Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Position Title. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Manager will work closely with scientists within the Phillips Lab, and is expected to work with a high level of independence and judgment. The candidate should be capable of obtaining the necessary information and knowledge to develop procedures, implement, analyze and interpret research program data in a self-directed manner.

The Research Manager of the Phillips Lab research facility will be required to work with a wide range of research initiatives across multiple health science themes ranging from cardiovascular health to neuroscience.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Leadership:
  • Provide high-level technical support toward the Phillips Lab research objectives
  • Support the Phillips Lab by providing knowledge, skills, and training to research staff, fellows, and trainees on the operation and research applications of the specialized rehabilitation equipment
  • Manage research staff to enhance employee engagement, drive innovation, achieve of the goals of the team, and advance the performance culture that is necessary to attain the goals of the Eyes High Strategy and Precision Medicine strategic platform
  • Managerial duties include:
  • Full cycle recruitment of research staff including full/part-time staff and summer students
  • Creates and updates jobs profiles as needed
  • Ensure salary decisions are aligned with project needs and budgets
  • Full-scope performance management of the facility research staff, including termination when required
  • Provide feedback and encouragement to staff
  • Conduct annual performance reviews
  • Project Management:
  • Manage the daily operations of the Phillips Lab research facility including maintenance and control of equipment and computer software and ordering materials and equipment
  • Conduct and assist in the conduct of experiments using human rehabilitation equipment
  • Conduct and assist in the conduct of experiments using human physiological and/or electrophysiological equipment
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all Phillips lab research facility equipment for various users.
  • Build customized hardware tailored to Principal Investigators\' experiments
  • Strategic Management:
  • Assist with plans and design specialized applications to meet the needs of Phillips Lab researchers including the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes and improvements to methods, procedures and practices within the Phillips Lab research facility
  • Expert knowledge of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
  • Scientific Contribution:
  • Conduct literature reviews, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Conduct data extraction, management, security, ethical compliance, and analysis. This includes familiarity with equipment and computer programs with original programming for analysis being a valuable asset
  • Design and program novel software and hardware components to expand the Phillips Lab network and applications
  • Decision Making:
  • Develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research with limited supervision and direction
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the Phillips Lab research network
  • Work closely with financial and managerial personnel to oversee the financial operations of the facility
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • PhD in Neuroscience, Physiology, Engineering, Anatomy or similar required
  • Experience with human rehabilitation equipment (clinical or research)
  • Experience with the use of human physiological and/or electrophysiological recording equipment, including analysis of data
  • Minimum three years related technical experience within the research specialty field with 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Experience with preparing and coordinating successful grant applications
  • Experience managing in a unionized research environment an asset
  • Expertise in the use of these techniques will be assessed based on the candidate\xc3\xa2\xe2\x82\xac\xe2\x84\xa2s publications
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
