Please note for people leaders: We work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working in the Calgary office, and all people leaders are encouraged to have in-person presence for a minimum of 40% of the time to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities.

About this role:

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regional Laboratory Manager, Testing to join our dynamic Calgary team. The work of our Laboratory Testing Managers is integral to Canadian Blood Services role as Canada\xe2\x80\x99s Lifeline.

In this role, you will manage the laboratory process flows to meet customer needs and monitor operational effectiveness through key performance indicators and other means. You will manage the scientific, technical and performance aspects of testing as well as manage and monitor the capital equipment and operating budget for the consolidated testing laboratory site. You will manage the supervisory, technical, training and support staff assigned to the testing laboratory site and manage the process for and provide leadership for staff training, development and succession planning. The incumbent manages the donor testing facility and equipment to ensure that there is adequate space for specifications and regulatory requirements; that environmental requirements are met; and, ensures that facility occupational health and safety requirements are met. You will lead laboratory initiatives and participate in corporate initiatives to improve operational and technical efficiency and effectiveness. You will maintain effective communication on all levels and maintain comprehensive theoretical knowledge of medical laboratory science and procedural methods through advanced studies, reviewing current literature and attending conferences. Also, monitors and reports compliance with corporate quality standards for all laboratory areas.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manages the laboratory process flows to meet customer needs and monitors operational effectiveness through key performance indicators and other means

  • Develops, manages and monitors the capital equipment and operating budget for the testing laboratory site
  • Manages the supervisory, technical, training and support staff assigned to the testing laboratory site
  • Manages the process for and provides leadership for staff training, development and succession planning
  • Manages testing facility and equipment to ensure that there is adequate space for current and future testing needs; that equipment is appropriate for testing needs and meets specifications and regulatory requirements; that environmental requirements are met; and, ensures the facility occupational health and safety requirements are met
  • Leads laboratory initiatives and participates in corporate initiatives to improve operational and technical efficiency and effectiveness
  • Maintains effective communication on all levels
  • Maintains comprehensive theoretical knowledge of medical laboratory science and procedural methods through advanced studies, reviewing current literature and attending conferences
  • Monitors and reports compliance with corporate quality standards for all laboratory areas
Required Skills:
  • Certified general registered technologist with Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and professional college as required in province of testing site College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
  • B.Sc. or ART, or equivalent experience/training required
  • Business or academic education/training in management , leadership or hospital/laboratory administration is preferred
  • Several years of transfusion medicine or molecular testing related laboratory experience is required, with a minimum of three years in a supervisory/managerial capacity
  • Six (6) to ten (10) years related laboratory experience including a minimum of 5 years supervisory/managerial experience and management training, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Previous GMP experience or in depth knowledge of comparable quality management systems required
  • Must have experience with analytical testing software associated with automated test equipment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products
  • Demonstrated proficiency with budget preparation and monitoring
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Must be available to staff, when required
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills are required
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, staff development and communication skills are essential
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced environment is essential
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English are essential
