The Policy Research Analyst, reporting to the Vice President of Government Affairs, plays a crucial role in supporting Cenovus\xe2\x80\x99s strategic objectives by analyzing and monitoring policy developments and their potential impact on the organization. The analyst\'s primary responsibilities include tracking, summarizing, and extracting business-relevant information from third-party policy research, and understanding which internal partners would benefit from this information. The researcher would identify and convey new policy research opportunities to organizations that Cenovus is affiliated with. The analyst will closely monitor the external policy landscape as well as domestic and international government legislation to identify trends and ideas that could either benefit or pose challenges to Cenovus\xe2\x80\x99s business.

The Policy Research Analyst will collaborate with internal partners to develop and articulate corporate policy positions. This involves conducting in-depth research, analyzing data, and preparing comprehensive reports to advise Cenovus\xe2\x80\x99s policy decisions. Additionally, they will play a key role in preparing Cenovus staff to represent the company\'s policy positions externally, ensuring consistent messaging and effective advocacy. They will recreate Cenovus\xe2\x80\x99s policy positions in various formats to ensure clear and concise communication of the company\'s stance on relevant issues.

The successful candidate for this position will possess outstanding research and analytical skills, with a strong understanding of the public policy development process and an ability to translate sophisticated information into practical insights. The candidate should have a keen curiosity about public policy and its impact on the energy sector. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are crucial, as the analyst will work closely with internal collaborators and external organizations.

Responsibilities:
  • Support the company\xe2\x80\x99s advocacy strategy:
  • Identify and research individuals and organizations for the advocacy and outreach strategy
  • Follow key organizations, individuals, and policy trends to identify items that impact our business
  • Create and lead an inventory of opportunities to leverage (events, published papers, speaking engagements, roundtables, etc.) from external partners and other sources
  • Support execution of engagement with external partners through the creation of prep materials for outreach conversations
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to support the creation and implementation of the annual strategic engagement strategy
  • Occasionally attend events and relevant business functions
  • Support internal and external messaging and other requests with data validation and sourcing on a variety of topics including, but not limited to: peer performance and initiatives, environmental, social and governance trends, energy and energy transition statistics, evaluation of data to determine economic impact of Cenovus field operations on local communities, analysis of digital analytics for internal and external websites and social media channels, and analysis of Cenovus\xe2\x80\x99s internal audiences (staff) to help improve communications targeting.
  • Review proposed government policy positions to assess impact on Cenovus, provide executive summaries and suggest potential responses
  • This role will focus on North America with a view to global trends and opportunities
  • Besides the Government Affairs team, this role will work closely with other internal teams including: Sustainability, Investor Relations, Finance, Enterprise Risk, Community & Indigenous Affairs, Communications, Innovation
  • Other ad hoc tasks as identified
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of proven experience.
  • Experience working with government relations, sustainability, communications or public relations, or research (considered an asset).
  • Show skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Flexibility to travel as required.
  • Post-Secondary certificate or diploma in Public Policy, Economics, Sustainability, Finance or related background.
  • Strong research skills with the ability to apply research findings to business issues
  • Outstanding ability to think critically and apply outside-the-box thinking
  • Ability to assess sophisticated materials and simplify in an easy-to-understand manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter capable of working independently
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
