Position Summary

Laurier is a leader in cold regions research. Our growing emphasis in this area has led to the development of a large and active research program in the Northwest Territories. This is formalized through the Government of the NWT - Laurier Partnership agreement providing direct dialogue between Laurier researchers and GNWT decision makers.

We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier northern research community and contribute to this exciting initiative as a Research Coordinator. The Research Coordinator will be responsible for two main areas: 1) managing the projects and administration needed to support the work for Laurier's Global Water Futures project entitled Northern Water Futures. The role will support the Principal Investigator and a team of more than fifty Canadian Arctic researchers. This position will involve coordination and execution of all aspects of new and on-going research with the project. They will also participate in the analysis of project data, writing of reports, and may be involved in presentations and/or stakeholder engagement efforts. 2) supporting the coordination of efforts within the University to diversify and enhance our contributions to northern research and capacity building through the Government of the NWT - Laurier Partnership. This will involve supporting communications regarding northern initiatives institutionally, helping to coordinate meetings and research initiatives of northern researchers at Laurier, and working closely with a knowledge mobilization on the communication of northern research outside of Laurier.

The incumbent will report to the NWF Principal Investigator and GNWT - Laurier Faculty Liaison lead, Dr. Jennifer Baltzer. They will also work directly with other members of the university and external stakeholders as required.

Accountabilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to,

Coordination and General Project Administration:

  • Coordinates and executes the day-to-day operations of the project (NWF);
  • Acts as a liaison between various members of the research team (NWF) or northern researchers (GNWT-Laurier);
  • Organizes workshops and meetings and coordinates post-meeting communications;
  • Ensures accurate and detailed records are maintained;
  • Contributes to grant writing and organization and related activities to advance Laurier - GNWT partnership activities though:
  • completing research of external grant and funding opportunities and articulating application requirements
  • facilitating and compiling research for funding applications
  • working with researchers to summarize information and complete applications
  • Coordinates Northern Research webinars as part of Laurier's outreach and engagement
  • Supports web and social media presence and other forms of communication as part of Laurier's northern research initiatives through:
  • planning, writing, and maintaining content for website, social media
  • continuously engaging audience through consistent posts to social media and respond to comments
  • developing and summarizing information for presentations
  • managing creative projects including videos, brochures, newsletters as well communicate across different platforms
Finance
  • Manages Northern Water Futures (NWF) project budget through:
  • Consistent review of the budget including highlighting under- or overspending and presenting a planning with research finance to ensure financial sustainability
  • Ensuring financial commitments are being adhered to
  • Manages accounts receivables and payables (NWF);
  • Oversees and completes expense reports (NWF);
  • Collaborates with various units across campus including research finance, the office of research services, accounts payable and procurement to ensure compliance with university and funder policies (NWF);
  • Prepares financial reports for project funders in a timely manner (NWF);
Reporting
  • Sets up project tracking systems;
  • Completes and manages the project tracking system;
  • Writes annual reports for funders and other stakeholder groups (NWF and in support of the GNWT-Laurier Partnership).
Qualifications
  • MSc in a related discipline (e.g., environment or natural resources programs);
  • 2 years of demonstrated experience coordinating research grant functions including reporting and expenses;
  • Previous exposure to proposal writing;
  • Passionate about northern research;
  • Strong organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills;
  • Results oriented and highly adept at setting priorities with a strong ability to handle multiple priorities and meet short deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a complex environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
This position is not eligible for educational equivalencies.

Compensation:

Position Grade: EX-E

Rate of Pay: $ 52,040 - $ 68,000

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time limited term position for 24 months. The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday
