Manager, Financial Reporting
Role Description
Reporting to the AC, the Manager Financial Reporting (Manager) is primarily responsible for complex accounting and research, the drafting of quarterly and annual finance materials for SMT and the Board, and other reporting matters that would benefit from experienced, technical judgement.
This is a key development role requiring a deep, demonstrated understanding of IFRS and its application, the ability to analyze and elevate data and trends into meaningful insights, and the ability to articulate those insights for SMT/Board consumption in a private enterprise setting.
Core Responsibilities
Team Leadership

  • Through their own work and the work of the accounting team, executes on the internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Provides support, guidance and in some cases direct supervision to team members
  • Guides the day-to-day work of the team to meet departmental targets and reporting deadlines
  • Responsible for producing, through their own work and the work of their team, the historical financial information that supports strategic decision making, forecasting, and achieving business goals.
  • Brings judgement and experience to the development of key accounting positions.
  • Will bring finance input to projects and analysis supporting operational decision making.
  • Contributes to a culture that reflects the Kal Tire AIMS and supports team member development, engagement, and a positive work environment.
  • Supports continuous improvement and growth initiatives through the Reporting remit.
  • Assesses staffing requirements and makes recommendations to the Controller, if required.
  • Provides support, guidance and supervision to our accounting team that provides bookkeeping services for our Kal Tire Franchise Stores.
  • Responsible for ensuring staff have the correct training and oversight.
Accounting and Financial Reporting
  • Draft quarterly financial review materials for SMT and Board consumption.
  • Review certain branch level, divisional, and legal entity financial statements for entities domiciled in Canada, working with the tax department as required.
  • Prepare and present Canadian long-form balance sheet review and related analysis (inventory DSI, ROIC).
  • Direct oversight of more complex accounting areas that require judgement (lease accounting, fixed asset accounting, ECL provision, inventory shrink/obsolete provisions, impairment analysis).
  • Undertake analysis and resolution of more complex/non-routine accounting issues, which may include leading new accounting standard implementations, acquisition accounting and documentation of key accounting positions.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements and financial ratio covenants for bank syndicate.
  • Prepare and report certain key financial metrics for various levels of reporting.
Financial Performance Analysis for Management Decision Making
  • Understands Kal Tires business from a Finance perspective.
  • Collaborates with all levels of Management to understand what information is needed for business decision-making.
  • Analyzes data and summarizes findings in a manner that clearly identifies key business performance issues, facilitating efficient and effective management decision making.
  • Ensures accounting is compliant with IFRS.
  • Stays up to date on recent IFRS pronouncements and communicates their impact to the Controller.
  • Provides timely and insightful financial analysis for management via quarterly board reporting.
  • Respond to adhoc requests for financial analysis for management in a timely manner.
  • Handling of complex operational accounting and reporting issues in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Succession planning over a 2-3 year time horizon, with optionality/alternatives.
Work Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in public practice working on large public company audit engagements.
  • Minimum 2 years supervising or leading teams.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong technical IFRS knowledge with a history of pragmatic application in-line with the needs of financial information users.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Ability to evaluate complex business and accounting issues.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience with full-feature accounting systems.
  • Experience with developing Power BI dashboards would be a plus.
Project management to support the organizations strategic financial goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong financial reporting background, analytical skills, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams on complex financial initiatives.
Education
  • CPA designation is required.
