This will be an exciting role instrumental to the operation of an environmental laboratory in Atlantic Canada. If you are looking for an opportunity to put your spin on an operation and make a significant impact in laboratory operations, this role might be for you.What ALS OffersALS offers laboratory testing services across the world and in 2022 expanded into the Atlantic region with the construction of a laboratory in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This laboratory is currently accredited for microbiology and solids but in the planning stages of adding additional testing capacity. As part of this role, we offer you the opportunity to support the design and setup of additional testing while running operations for the current accredited parameters.   • Ensures the safety system in place is adhered to and works with the broader safety team to add addition safety items as required
  • Supports the operation by identifying and procuring the necessary equipment to ensure safety in the laboratory
  • Oversees the safe operation of the laboratory
  • Identifies and addresses unsafe laboratory practices
  • Tracks compliance to the OHS training requirements for all staff
  • Ensures legislative and best practice compliance issues are observed
  • Complies with all internal systems and procedures
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures
Quality
  • Fosters a working environment that ensures quality targets are met or exceeded
  • Meets or exceeds analytical data quality objectives
  • Maintains laboratory equipment to meet or exceed QC targets
  • Assesses the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required
  • Understands and ensures operations are completed according to the Quality System
  • Completes root cause investigations for corrective actions and confirms solutions are effective
  • Uses correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality
Operations
  • Ensures the Business Unit is suitably equipped and staffed
  • Tracks turn around times and acts to modify operations to meet the required timelines
  • Suggests ways to increase productivity and efficiency such as equipment upgrading or introducing new processes and technology
  • Recommends purchase of capital equipment and prepares capital expenditure requests
  • Ensures the efficient running of the laboratory including the co-ordination of resources and staff within the laboratory budget
  • Actively involved in the Regional Senior team to share ideas for continuous improvement in the region
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and sets this example for others
Human Resources & Corporate Compliance
  • Manages human resource programs within the business unit including:
  • Staff training programs (technical, supervisory, and safety)
  • Staff mentoring programs
  • Performance management
  • Staff career development
  • Recruitment and induction
  • Ensures that appropriate occupational health & safety practices and corporate compliance initiatives are being followed within the Business Unit
  • Ensures that all Corporate Compliance initiatives, reports and practices are adhered to
Financial
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget for the Business Unit and works with the team to meet/exceed the targets as specified in that budget
  • Ensures the business is run according to the Strategic and Business Plan
  • Responsible for achieving various financial targets
  • Establishes and monitors cost controls to ensure the business stays within budget
Client Services
  • Develops business relationships with key clients
  • Develops and supports business opportunities in the region
  • Responsible for ensuring that the client service provided is consistent and of high quality
  • Ensures that the business is suitably equipped and staffed, and uses approved methodologies to provide a quality service to clients
  • Ensures the service provided meets and exceeds client expectations
  • Active in associations attended by our clients to keep abreast of market needs
  • Involved with the formulation and implementation of a local business strategy (product positioning, key clients / markets and pricing)
General
  • Establishes short-, medium- and long-term division goals for the laboratory
  • Meets with staff on a continual basis to review the status of the laboratory and ensure goals and objectives are being met
  • Promotes teamwork between administration and production staff
  • Attends all corporate Managers meeting to report on progress of the Region
  • Reports monthly (or as required) on lab status, business opportunities and compliance requirements
  • Assists with quotations and proposals as required
  • Plays a key role in senior business development and fostering of relationships for client retention and growth
  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience working in an Environmental Analytical laboratory with specific experience with RBCA methods being an asset
  • Demonstrated experience working in a face-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities
  • Demonstrated experience in method development with a strong understanding of quality systems
  • Strong planning/thinking and implementation abilities
  • Client-focused with a commitment to quality
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Enthusiastic, positive attitude
  • Committed to organizational goals and objectives
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of a BSc degree or Technical diploma in Chemistry or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in environmental chemistry or related discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in a supervisory/management role
  • Preference to be familiar with all applicable environmental legislation and regulations \xe2\x80\x93 most important is RBCA experience
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs such as coolers, etc.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as keyboarding
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities
  • Ability to stand for up to a full shift
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odours
