Job Description


Overview:
The primary purpose of the Educational Developer, Career Programming is to design and develop innovative and inclusive career education content, resources, and curriculum to support the CCA leadership team in continuously evolving the CCA’s ability to meet the needs of its wide and growing range of stakeholders.

This role will drive forward high-priority strategic curriculum projects and act as a key liaison and relationship builder between the CCA and various departments on campus. Responsibilities:
Curriculum Leadership

  • Conducts needs assessments and recommends new programming and training for campus partners, and career practitioner professional development
  • Facilitates and coordinates discussion with members of the university to support the growth of quality Career Education supports
  • Influences stakeholder perspectives on career education with an emphasis on the importance of non-linear pathways, the future of work, skills identification and articulation, design thinking and other relevant career development theories
  • Advises the Centre for Career Action management team on strategies to facilitate faculty-career integration
  • Collaborates with, and provides mentorship to, Career Advisors on content development
  • Stays current with educational, technological, and societal trends impacting the delivery of higher education and career programming, and formulates positions based on this information for optimal strategies related to both online and face-to-face learning
  • Brings both depth in career development knowledge and breadth in understanding of how career education aligns with and uniquely supports Waterloo’s career/WIL/coop ecosystem toward future-proofing students, employers, and ourselves
  • Establishes external connections and relationships to stay informed of provincial, national and international initiatives; participates, represents, and in some cases, leads Waterloo’s involvement in external initiatives and collaborative projects
  • Consults with CEE on projects related to Career Education learning/supports
  • Networks with other institutions in the field of career development, curriculum development, and instructional design
  • Represents the University of Waterloo in career development associations and conferences

Curriculum Development
  • Through research, analysis, monitoring and understanding, generates new programming ideas
  • Continually renews program offerings to meet client needs
  • Develops internal and external relationships with career practitioners to support appropriate program development
  • Cultivates formal partnerships with academic departments, research centres, and Academic Support Units, to leverage and deliver Waterloo Career Education expertise through co-curricular and curricular offerings
  • Leads development of inclusive career-embedded curricula, ensuring competencies and learning outcomes are appropriate and meet learner needs
  • Project-manages own and occasionally peer curriculum development work, including tracking and communication of progress towards milestones and deadlines
  • Supports Communications Specialist with the curriculum web pages on the CCA web site and developing and updating curriculum processes and resources used by CCA staff

Programming Evaluation
  • Ensures that the CCA provides top-quality career education programming and workshops, which advance the goals and objectives of the University as they relate to innovation, reputation, Career Education leadership and employer and alumni engagement
  • Designs and facilitates curriculum exploration and/or program review events at the department level for both undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Develops resources related to all aspects of curriculum design and development, including the assessment of learning (beyond client satisfaction)
  • Consults on the development and assessment of career development expectations in relation to CCA and CEE strategic priorities
  • Gathers feedback on curricula from a variety of sources
  • Provides consultations and advice to Career Advisors on career development programming
  • Contributes to projects and working groups related to quality enhancement

Supervision
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and coaches student staff supporting curriculum development
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate university degree required
  • Courses, training, certification/degree, or equivalent experience in Career Development, Education, Adult Education, Curriculum Development, Instructional Design, Student Affairs, or a related field would be an asset
  • 5 years of relevant, related experience involved in design, development, delivery, and evaluation of career curriculum in a post-secondary environment
  • Experience with high-volume resource management and scheduling, and prioritizing competing demands
  • Success in cultivating and maintaining relationships with academic faculty, staff and students
    Comprehensive understanding of career development theory and methodologies of instructional design and adult learning pedagogy, and their application in learning
  • Knowledge of the Canadian and international Career Education landscape and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and build and maintain positive relationships with project stakeholders
  • In-depth understanding of e-learning tools, including Learning Management Systems (e.g., D2L/Brightspace), media development tools, collaboration tools, etc., and their application in higher education; intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to develop and coordinate projects and programs, delivering quality programming while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to manage own schedule and balance competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Appreciation of the purpose and value of quality work-integrated learning / co-operative education in preparing students for work/life is preferred
  • Understanding of own social location, power and privileges to call out own biases in personal design preferences; must be able to prioritize universal design and equity-specific needs in content creation
Vaccination Requirement Statement:
