Job Summary
The Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) is part of an ecosystem of innovation at UBC working to move UBC\'s university-wide priority themes of innovation, collaboration and inclusion into concrete practices and activities. As a resource-hub for community engaged learning and experiential programs at UBC, CCEL strives to enhance the academic work of students and faculty, through knowledge exchange, and collective learning and action with local community organizations.
CCEL envisions a just, sustainable and connected community. It contributes to this by connecting community with UBC faculty and students to work on issues that impact society today. The unit works closely with faculty and staff across the university to integrate experiential and community engaged learning (CEL), including Community Service Learning and Community-Based Research into academic courses and to ensure that meaningful learning opportunities are available inside and outside the context of coursework. At the same time, CCEL works with diverse community organizations, including non-profit organizations and public schools, to engage students in meaningful projects that contribute to student learning and the achievement of community-identified goals. The Centre is a unit focused on supporting student learning opportunities that enable values clarification, students to develop and showcase their research, professional skill development, and critical issue engagement.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Educational Designer, Curricular Programs is responsible for designing, developing, piloting, and refining training curriculum, workshops and resources for two Centre programs, Student Directed Seminars and Let\xe2\x80\x99s Talk Science.
The Student Directed Seminars program provides upper-year undergraduate students (in third year or later) the opportunity to propose, coordinate, and lead their own 3-credit seminar class with a small group of peers on a topic not currently offered at UBC-Vancouver.
Each seminar brings together a group of highly-motivated students to explore and investigate a topic through learning activities including group discussions, research papers, presentations, guest lectures, applied problem-solving, and Community Service Learning.
Let\xe2\x80\x99s Talk Science at UBC is a part of a national network of post-secondary partner sites dedicated to providing University students the training and resources to engage and inspire youth and K-12 educators to develop capacity in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Workshop curriculum will attend to the technical standards and requirements of the programs but emphasis will also be on supporting individual growth, goal setting, critical reflection as well as fostering a sense of belonging within the programs.
WORK PERFORMED
The position will perform the following duties:
Design, develop, pilot and refine workshop content and curriculum intended to support students to design, develop, facilitate and lead their own seminar course. This includes, but is not limited to, workshop content and curriculum to support students to effectively facilitate STEM workshops in K-12 classrooms.
Design, develop, pilot and refine additional educational resources and tools to complement and support program goals.
Liaise with Centre staff and other educators to identify gaps in programming, set priorities and develop recommendations based on criteria and/or program goals.
Develop and define quality key performance indicators intended to measure impact of workshop content for participants.
Inform the creation of systems to collect and monitor key performance indicators for use in reporting and as inputs into refinement and evolution of content.
Develop assessment tools that can be used to understand the impact of the program training programs.
Inform and develop evaluation strategies to measure impact of the programs
Other related responsibilities as required.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
Must exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including: UBC senior administrators, staff, students, alumni, faculty, staff within community organizations, individual community members, and others in external educational institutions and professional associations. UBC\'s community engagement activities have a high profile in the community and engage program participants in situations that may be new. Must be attentive to risk management in all situations; must be aware of the need to minimize risk to participants and maximize the perceived and actual sensitivity of programs/initiatives and the university to community issues. As the department is handling confidential information, must understand and respect the principles of confidentiality. Errors in judgment or the disclosure of confidential information could have very public consequences, affecting the reputation of the Centre for Community Engaged Learning and/or resulting in embarrassment to the University of British Columbia and its senior administration.

The incumbent works independently, with initiative and considerable autonomy. Recommendations are normally accepted as accurate and feasible. Work is reviewed for achievement of university goals, soundness of advice and judgment, and effectiveness of results.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
As required, responsible for supervision of part-time student assistants, student leaders and volunteers. Participates in hiring and/or selection of paid staff, student assistants/leaders, and volunteers as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of four years of related experience in adult education, higher education, curriculum development, or related field preferred.
Demonstrated experience with curriculum development or educational design and programming.
Related experience, preferably at a post-secondary institution where coordination, leadership, and strategic thinking abilities have been demonstrated.
Experience in conceptualizing, developing, and delivering workshop content.
Demonstrated experience in consultative and planning processes, particularly in educational contexts.
Demonstrated ability to develop co-workers\' capacity to engage in new activities, methods or approaches.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and demonstrated knowledge of inclusive excellence design principles.
Communication skills (listening, written and verbal), facilitation and negotiation skills, and presentation skills.
