About the role:

This role will participate as a senior member of the Commercial Delivery team and serve as the Commercial Real Estate subject matter expert (SME) within Meridian's Commercial Delivery business. The role will be accountable to develop and maintain policies to drive consistency and approach and will be required to develop expertise for Land Development and Construction industries.

What you will do:

  • Establish adequate controls and pricing guidelines to be used by Commercial Account managers in the acquisition and structure of commercial real estate deals.
  • As the SME for Land Development and Construction, serve as Commercial Delivery field resource in assessing all new and existing commercial real estate transactions of a material size on an on-going basis, to ensure the appropriate deal structure, pricing, and all deals meet/exceed minimum standards of credit compliance and conditions of credit.
  • Utilizing credit tools, conduct complete financial and risk assessments and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Act as an intermediary between the Commercial Business Banking Centre and Commercial Credit groups and provide an independent, objective risk assessment and evaluation of real estate transactions to ensure the appropriate application of risk management practices has been applied.
  • Conduct site visits and meet with principles of projects to ensure proper due diligence is completed on all material commercial real estate deals
  • Participation in credit due diligence as appropriate including site visits, Member/Prospect interviews, review of project budgets, sales forecasts etc. for reasonableness.
  • Prepare/update, on an ongoing basis, overall report summaries of outstanding and ongoing (material) projects
  • Partner effectively with Credit Risk Management as appropriate to enhance and refine industry specific lending policies and guidelines.
  • Develop policy guidelines for the subject industries and lead the timely delivery of industry specific education to the field including Commercial Relationship Managers and Commercial Credit team.
  • Lead the establishment and implementation of best practices and create support materials including models and reference materials to support and drive their application within the Commercial sales team.
  • Provide consultative advice as required to the Credit Recovery team as required
What you will bring:
  • Broad Financial Services knowledge with a minimum of 10-20 years of commercial real estate lending/adjudication experience with major Canadian FI(s)
  • Working knowledge of the credit syndication process and direct experience with the loan syndication process
  • Relevant experience and good knowledge of overall contacts in Meridian's primary geographic markets
  • Proven experience in the areas of structuring and pricing land development, residential construction, MURBs, retirement homes, and other ICI to meet or exceed minimum compliance requirements
  • Proficient in risk management and good understanding of the audit function
  • In depth knowledge of business and key functions of Commercial Credit and Commercial Credit processes and Canadian.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in credit management and knowledge on commercial banking credit strategy and risk rating methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - with a demonstrated ability to convey information to a variety of audiences.
  • A strong team leader and team player. Possesses a leadership style that will be effective in coaching, and the ability to build superb relationships and partnerships at the peer level.
  • Strong strategic/critical thinking, problem resolution and decision-making abilities
  • Strong technical and analytical ability to interpret and utilize Meridian's data and reports.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills sufficient to identify problems, generate solutions and decide on a course of action. Ability to evaluate solutions in terms of business, financial and member impacts.
