Job Description

The Word On The Street (WOTS) is seeking an ambitious, early-career fundraiser to help us raise funds to champion reading and writing in the Toronto area through our annual book and magazine festival and other events. The Development Coordinator will develop and execute donor engagement and stewardship strategies for individuals and foundations. They will also support grants and sponsorship acquisition and manage volunteer recruitment, training, coordination, and recognition for Word On The Street events.The Word On The Street champions reading and writing in Canada through a free annual festival and year-round literary programming that celebrates storytelling, ideas, and imagination. We are a creative, mission-driven team that values learning and experimentation. We create accessible, welcoming events that foster community and prioritize diverse and marginalized voices.This is a remote, full-time position with possibility for renewal on an annual basis. Performance reviews will be conducted after three and six months in the role. An extended health and dental benefits plan is available after three months. A budget for professional development is also available. This is a new position with a starting compensation of $40,000-42,000 per year. Some evening and weekend work will be required in the lead-up to and execution of events.Fundraising & Donor Outreach (70%)

  • Develop and implement strategies for donor acquisition, cultivation, and stewardship for monthly, annual, and major gift campaigns
  • Participate in researching, identifying, and qualifying new donors while regularly updating prospect pipelines for foundation and individual giving
  • Develop, build and support relationships with current and potential funders, including cultivating relationship for funding, stewardship of confirmed agreements/gifts, and reporting on impact
  • Maintain the organization's donor database and key spreadsheets to track donor engagement and communications
  • Support new fundraising events and initiatives to engage new donors
  • Produce fundraising performance reports; track and monitor donations and deliverables
  • Work with the WOTS fundraising committee to support board-led fundraising
  • Actively research and keep up-to-date on fundraising best practices, trends, innovations and technologies in the nonprofit arts sector
Volunteer Coordination (20%)
  • Work with other staff to identify event volunteer needs and ensure these needs are met through the recruitment and orientation process
  • Manage volunteer recruitment, training, coordination, and recognition for the Word On The Street's annual festival and other events
  • Liaise with volunteers in advance of events and on site to answer questions and prepare volunteers to meet the needs of the organization
Other Projects (10%)
  • Support sponsorship acquisition and stewardship, as requested
  • Support the Festival Director in applying for and/or meeting the requirements of government grants
  • Participate in and support additional organizational projects, initiatives and campaigns as requested
Assets and Qualifications
  • Relevant education and/or professional experience in nonprofit fundraising, volunteer management, or related fields
  • Understanding of fundraising fundamentals and donor stewardship, as well as an understanding of and commitment to ethical fundraising practices
  • Organizational, analytical and relationship building skills
  • Confident, friendly, professional, and comfortable with cold calling
  • Outstanding social and relationship management skills
  • Position demands the ability to positively interact internally as a team member, as well as externally with donors and leadership members
  • Ability to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, revise plans, and document the process and results
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Volunteer training and management experience
  • Ability to compile event results into succinct, informative reports, and recommend adjustments in response to feedback
  • Passion for Canadian and Indigenous books, magazines, and other literature and familiarity with the Canadian publishing industry
