Who We Are

The Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies (CCMS) fosters academic and public discussion and understanding of Muslim societies and cultures. It shifts the analysis from the notion of a single religious landscape defined by the religion of Islam to that of Muslims of different experiences and interpretations as agents in the construction of their societies and cultures. The Centre also examines the broader political, social, cultural, economic, and environmental forces that shape the Middle East and North Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and other Muslim communities globally.

About the Role

The Coordinator, Administration and Outreach, supports the operations and activities of the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies in a variety of areas including: budget management; preparation of grant applications; strategic planning; event planning; advancement initiatives; outreach initiatives. Establishes and cultivates contacts with local Muslim communities and other stakeholders at the local, provincial, and federal levels.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a graduate degree with a substantial background in Muslim studies (broadly defined, which can include Middle East, South Asian, Southeast Asian Studies, or the study of Muslim communities globally) and extensive firsthand experience working with Muslim communities in Canada or abroad. The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in budget management, event management, outreach and engagement, or some combination thereof. Ability to work collaboratively to build and advance a strategic vision for the CCMS, through grant writing, donor engagement, and planning and execution of academic events.

Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences with a substantive background in Muslim studies, and four years of experience in budget management, event management, outreach and engagement, or additional graduate training.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Muslim cultures and social practices; proficiency in one or more languages spoken in Muslim-majority countries; ability to exercise cultural sensitivity when dealing with members of the Muslim community.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of academic work environments.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in budget planning, financial management, office management.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing and publishing, including prior experience with Adobe In-Design.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, establish priorities, meet deadlines, and work on a number of different initiatives concurrently.
