As a Clinical Coordinator focused in Indigenous Mental Health you will:

  • Support the delivery of VCH mental health and substance use services with the First Nations communities in the health region.
  • Proactively build or strengthen relationships between First Nations mental wellness and substance use teams with local VCH mental health and substance use personnel.
  • Responsively support requests for complex care planning from Indigenous Communities, and supporting the coordination and access to those specialized services.
  • Plan and promote inter-disciplinary practice and collaboration (this may involve a mix of virtual / online as well as face-to-face collaborations).
  • Support First Nations community members to navigate VCH services and to remove barriers to access.
  • Coordinate a community of practice across the region for the First Nations mental wellness and substance use workforce with a goal of strengthening the continuum of MWSU services to be culturally-based and holistic, as well as based on trauma-informed, relational and recovery-oriented models of practice.
  • Participate, with the Director/Manager in evaluating services to ensure the JPB Flagship project goals are met.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders on the achievement of the Flagship Project goals and objectives, including Mental Wellness and Substance use leaders from the First Nations Health Authority and from the VCH MHSU Teams and Leadership.
  • Support recruitments occurring in communities where requested (e.g. tools, interview panels, guidance on interview questions).
  • Participate in the development policies and procedures for new procedures where these are agreed with communities to enhance continuity of care for First Nations community members.
Positions working in First Nations communities report within their own management structures and not to this Clinical Coordinator position. Leadership in this context requires the Clinical Coordinator to work positively with Health Directors / leaders in First Nations communities to provide additional clinical indigenous leadership for their mental wellness workforce in support of their own local activity. The Clinical Coordinator needs to be seen as a resource for Health Directors and leaders to help each community provide the best quality care for their community members who need mental wellness support.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Masters' Degree in Mental Health / Addictions or Health Sciences discipline from a recognized program.

Minimum of three (3) years' recent, related experience providing mental health and addiction clinical services and/or group facilitation, supplemented by one (1) year's recent, related administration/supervisory/leadership experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience with a First Nations / Indigenous population.

Valid BC Driver's License as regular travel will be required to the First Nations communities within the Vancouver Coastal Health geographic region.

Knowledge & Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous mental illness and substance use issues including current trends, best practices and modalities of treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health and addiction service delivery systems, service mandates, referral guidelines, legislation and government policies, in particular with an indigenous lens.
  • Broad knowledge of group treatment modalities as applicable which are appropriate to indigenous clients, families and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct mental health assessments, and to provide treatment planning and case coordination that is specific to indigenous clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, facilitate and evaluate group programs, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as an effective team leader, motivator, coach/mentor, and team member within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to model and foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful team working environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical and administrative supervision and consultation.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to facilitate team building and to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, problem solve, and deal effectively with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physician, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes open and direct communication and leads to a cooperative approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, organize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community partners and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.
  • Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail software.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
This role can be based out of any community within VCH and will work remotely from one of those locations with some in-office time expected Travel within the Coastal Community of Care will be required.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
