Reporting to the Beef Technical Foreperson at the Ontario Beef Research Centre - Elora (OBRC-Elora), the Beef Research Technician provides technical expertise in the planning, coordination, implementation, delivery, and quality control of beef livestock research at OBRC-Elora. In conjunction with the Technical Foreperson and researchers, the incumbent will be involved in the planning of research projects and will be fully responsible for ensuring all aspects of the development and effective execution of the projects. Duties will include: implementation of research plans; collection of research data; utilization of research data for statistical analysis; overseeing the beef herd management, including animal care and production standards and animal identification, inventory and tracking; ensuring proper calibration and maintenance of research equipment; and providing guidance to and coordination of temporary staff and graduate students.

Requirements of this position include: Masters in Animal Science or Animal Production along with two (2) years of experience in a beef science setting, or the equivalent education and experience. Additional requirements include: a clear understanding of the principles, practices and procedures that are required to achieve precision and accuracy in research data; strong knowledge of both scientific experimentation and the use of specialized research equipment; the ability to gain and maintain the confidence and trust of researchers; knowledge of cattle behaviour; knowledge of animal welfare standards and demonstrated animal handling skills; experience with sample collection, ability to give injections, place catheters and perform minor surgical techniques; outstanding oral and written communication skills; excellent computer skills; ability to execute complex instructions without direct supervision; and the ability to effectively lead and be part of a team.

Normal work week is 40 hours, work on weekends and holidays as scheduled. The incumbent is also expected to be flexible to cover workloads during peak periods, weekends, vacation schedules or emergency staff shortages. All positions require physical strength and stamina. The incumbent must be prepared to work as required in all weather and typical barn environments
