Part of the Taggart Group of Companies, Taggart Realty Management focuses on acquiring, developing, leasing and managing retail, residential, office and commercial property owned by the Taggart Group or owned in partnership with third party investors. Taggart Realty Management has a significant number of projects under its management and is growing the portfolio of income producing properties through development and acquisition. As we continue to build on our real estate portfolio, we are currently looking for candidates in the role of Assistant Controller to support the Controller directly in leading the financial processes of the properties under management.
Work Description

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for oversight of the day-to-day accounting activities within the property management function. The Assistant Controller will act as a key resource to the various positions on the team while managing and supporting the accounts payable and accounts receivable clerks. They will review and approve the monthly and quarterly financial statements prior to issuing to stakeholders. Additionally, the Assistant Controller will prepare all CAM recovery calculations for the properties as part of the budget and year end requirements. The performance of duties requires an ability to manage priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet filing deadlines.

Major Responsibilities:
Assistant Controller

  • Review work prepared by property accountants or accounting manager, such as bank reconciliations, accounts receivable reports and pre-authorized payment files
  • Manage cash flow needs of the various properties
  • Review of payment requests and related documents prior to submission to cheque signatories
  • Assist with resolution of day-to-day issues faced by the staff, escalating to the Controller or others as appropriate
  • Manage direct reports, ensuring monthly duties of team members are performed as expected and in accordance with policies and deadlines
  • Support the Controller in maintaining strong relationships with the Operations and Asset Management teams, to help ensure business activities and plans are properly reflected in the financial records, budgets, and forecasts
  • Coordinate the preparation and analysis of financial reports, including cash flow forecasts, monthly, and quarterly reporting
  • Responsible for the preparation and calculation of the annual CAM recoveries for the budget and year end statements
  • Day to day liaison with the Operations team to provide accurate and timely financial information to tenants and owners
  • Review the preparation of the monthly and quarterly financial statements, liaising with the finance team and other stakeholders
  • Provide support and participate in regular cross-training in order to provide coverage for other positions within the finance team as needed
  • Support the Controller in handling of external service providers such as insurers, lenders, auditors and other key stakeholders in the year end process
  • Identify and bring forward ideas for possible improvements in day-to-day accounting. functions, assisting with implementation where approved by management
  • Provide leadership and strong mentorship to other members of the property accounting team through timely review and feedback of monthly work
  • All other duties as required

Statement of Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • A minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience is required, with 3 years of management experience
  • CPA designation, or designation in process is required
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel and Word), and in various financial software
  • Prior experience in the property management and experience with the Yardi software package would be considered an asset
  • Prior experience in Public Accounting would be considered an asset
  • Experience in “taxprep” software would be an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong ability to analyze and problem solve
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment, and to challenge and improve current practices
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Experience in a multi-company environment would be considered an asset
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and approach situations in a diplomatic and professional manner

Work Environment:
  • Year-end and month end processes can be challenging, additional hours may be required at times to meet deadlines
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time at workstation
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
