Pleasant Heights After School is looking for new volunteer Board Members to join our leadership team. Pleasant Heights After School (PHAS) was one of the first organizations to provide before & after school care to children in northwest Calgary. PHAS is a nonprofit charitable organization providing childcare to over 200 children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 from three Calgary schools.
With three locations in northwest Calgary, King George School, Mount Pleasant Community Centre, and Panorama Hills School, PHAS works with families to support their child's development in a safe, caring, and inclusive environment. Our enthusiastic and qualified staff provide age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities that encourage each child's growth and socialization. At PHAS, children play, learn and have fun!
Board Member
Role: Board members serve as part of the governing body of the organization, providing strategic leadership, direction oversight, financial accountability, and support to ensure the organization achieves its mission and goals. Board members do not engage in day-to-day operational tasks or management of employees.
Key Responsibilities:
Governance:
o Participate in the development and approval of the organization's strategic plan, mission, and vision.
o Review and approve annual budgets, financial reports, and major policies.
o Monitor organizational performance against strategic goals and objectives.
o Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
o Evaluate the performance of the CEO/Executive Director.
Stewardship:
o Act as fiduciaries, safeguarding the organization's assets and resources.
o Support fundraising efforts, including identifying potential donors or sponsors.
o Ensures finances are accounted for, and audit is conducted annually for the AGM approval. Voting in an auditor each year.
Advocacy:
o Represent the organization in the community and advocate for its mission.
o Strengthen relationships with stakeholders, partners, and funders.
Time Commitment:
Attend all scheduled board meetings and participate in committee work.
Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance.
Attend organizational events and activities, as needed.
2-3 hours per month.
Governance vs. Operations
Governance: The board's role is focused on high-level oversight and strategic planning. Governance activities include:
Setting the mission, vision, and strategic direction.
Approving budgets, policies, and major initiatives.
Hiring, supporting, and evaluating the CEO/Executive Director.
Monitoring organizational risks and ensuring legal compliance.
Providing expertise when requested on various professional matters such as: contract negotiations, legal support, HR guidance, financial planning/investments, advertising, etc.
Operations: Day-to-day operations are the responsibility of the CEO/Executive Director and staff. Operational activities include:
Managing employees and volunteers.
Implementing programs and services.
Handling daily financial management and administrative tasks.
Executing the board-approved strategic plan.
