As part of this employment opportunity, you will be involved with helping improve people's lives through helping them develop a more efficient visual system. You will be working with children who have learning difficulties, not because they have poor eyesight (i.e. they may have 20/20 and may not need glasses) but how their brain takes in information via their eyes/visual system and how they process the information visually is not working efficiently. As a result, many of these children will be labelled as LD (learning disabled) or dyslexic or be put on an IPP program. One crucial but often missed step in helping these children overcome their learning difficulties (in the school system) is to look at visual information processing / visual perception / eye tracking. This is one of the areas that the team members at Calgary Vision Therapy work in. You will also be working with children or adults helping them learn to better coordinate their eyes and improve the flexibility of their accommodative system. You may have the opportunity to work with individuals along the autism spectrum or those who have had concussions/traumatic brain injuries.
Although there is little to no heavy lifting, applicants must have knees and back in good working condition as the therapist goes between being on their feet to sitting throughout the workday. Applicant must have reliable transportation to ensure arrival at work on time.
Although vision therapy is provided for individuals of any age, experience working with children is an asset. Experience as a teaching assistant, tutor or a background in child psychology an asset but not required.
