As part of this employment opportunity, you will be involved with helping improve people's lives through helping them develop a more efficient visual system. You will be working with children who have learning difficulties, not because they have poor eyesight (i.e. they may have 20/20 and may not need glasses) but how their brain takes in information via their eyes/visual system and how they process the information visually is not working efficiently. As a result, many of these children will be labelled as LD (learning disabled) or dyslexic or be put on an IPP program. One crucial but often missed step in helping these children overcome their learning difficulties (in the school system) is to look at visual information processing / visual perception / eye tracking. This is one of the areas that the team members at Calgary Vision Therapy work in. You will also be working with children or adults helping them learn to better coordinate their eyes and improve the flexibility of their accommodative system. You may have the opportunity to work with individuals along the autism spectrum or those who have had concussions/traumatic brain injuries.

Although there is little to no heavy lifting, applicants must have knees and back in good working condition as the therapist goes between being on their feet to sitting throughout the workday. Applicant must have reliable transportation to ensure arrival at work on time.

Although vision therapy is provided for individuals of any age, experience working with children is an asset. Experience as a teaching assistant, tutor or a background in child psychology an asset but not required.

We will provide the necessary training for the suitable person.

Personality, ability to learn, work independently, work together with others effectively and smoothly, and follow direction is of utmost importance.

We are not looking for someone who just wants a job to collect a paycheck. We want enthusiastic individuals who are looking for a long term career. Part time position to start. Initial duties will be to learn to provide visual information processing evaluations (administering, marking, and creating reports) along with answering phones and booking appointments. Through the training process, you will begin to learn various vision therapy procedures through guidance and instruction of our established vision therapists and by observing office vision therapy sessions. You will need to be self motivated and responsible for practicing these procedures (without direct supervision) as part of your learning process.

More hours are to be added as demand for services increase. Thursday evenings and Saturdays required. Individuals with prior vision therapy experience working at another clinic also encouraged to apply.

Visit www.calgaryvt.com for more information on optometric vision therapy.

Must include salary expectation, references and compelling letter of introduction with your resume.
