Job Description


The Department of Social Science at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John invites applications for a Field Education Coordinator in our Social Work program. This position is at the rank of assistant teaching professor and is housed within an interdisciplinary department that includes Social Work, Sociology, Communication Studies and Education. The Bachelor of Social Work program offers a generalist social work education. The first intake of students is expected in September 2024. The Bachelor of Social Work Program welcomes all qualified applicants and encourages equity deserving/denied groups to apply to this position. The successful candidate will have:

  • Master\'s in social work.
  • Experience with the delivery field education in social work.
  • Five or more years of social work practice post BSW or MSW or three years of social work practice post BSW or MSW with relevant lived experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of decolonialization, equity, and intersectionality in practice and education.
  • Previous involvement with experiential learning would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the social service and community development network in New Brunswick.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Flexible, able to prioritize and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proven record of achieving project goals on time and produce deliverables of a high quality.
  • Able to perform in a fast-paced work environment with new challenges daily.
  • Eligibility for registration with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers.
The Field Education Coordinator will work collaboratively with other faculty in the social work program as well as the Office of Experiential Learning, to administer the field education component for BSW students. The position will have a primary focus on facilitating appropriate matches between students and field placement settings and linking curriculum with placements through the delivery of three placement related courses yearly: SWRK 3005: Field Education I (6ch); SWRK 3505: Field Education II (6ch); and SWRK 4005: Field Education III (12ch). Additional focus will be on ensuring students learning needs are met and align with the needs of the field setting. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Identification of potential new placements.
  • Recruitment of new placement supervisors.
  • Relationship building with local social work practitioners.
  • Ongoing communications and collaboration with the Office of Experiential Learning at UNB.
  • Development and maintenance of the Field Education Guide.
  • Develop field experience procedures, policies, and guidelines that will be used to communicate opportunities to partners and students.
  • Assisting students and field supervisors to trouble shoot problems.
  • Site visits to placement locations may be required.
  • Other field placement related duties as they arise.

The successful candidate may be expected to teach undergraduate Field Education seminars in social work including which are SWRK 3005: Field Education I; SWRK 3505: Field Education II; and SWRK 4003: Field Education III. The successful candidate will have input in to the ongoing development of the field education component of the BSW program here at UNBSJ.
