Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Indigenous Land-Based Education
The Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for a full-time, probationary tenure-track faculty position in Indigenous Land-Based Education at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is designated for self-identified Indigenous persons (First Nation, M\xc3\xa9tis, and/or Inuit) only.
Located in Treaty 1 Territory in the homeland of the Red River M\xc3\xa9tis, the university is situated on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Inin\xc3\xadwak, Anishinini, Oceti Sakowin, and Denesuline peoples. The Faculty of Education offers a five-year integrated Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, a two-year after-degree BEd program, a BA in Developmental Studies, a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education for in-service teachers, a graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy, and Access Education Programs. Our Access Education Programs are designed to provide academic opportunities for Indigenous and racialized persons, people with inner city experience, as well as single parents, mature students, and newcomers. Access programs include the Winnipeg Education Centre Program (WEC), the Community-based Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (CATEP), the Immigrant Teacher Education Program (ITEP), the Build from Within (BFW) Program, and the Indigenous Knowledge Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (IKPBDE) Program.
This tenure-track position will primarily support the Faculty of Education in delivering Indigenous Land-Based Education within the Access programs. In addition to the preparation of preservice teachers leading to provincial certification, the education programs at the University of Winnipeg provide additional foci on urban inner-city education, coalition building, and decolonial liberation work.
This faculty position specializes in Indigenous Land-Based Education. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate degree or be a doctoral degree candidate who has all but defended their thesis before the start date of the appointment. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Indigenous land-based education or any combination of Education, Arts, and/or Science that has a substantial Indigenous focus. Candidates should be qualified to design and teach courses related to Indigenous land-based education, a commitment to working and researching collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and an interest in fostering and enhancing connections with Indigenous individuals and organizations. We welcome candidates who have direct land-based experiences, who bring knowledge of land-based pedagogy informed by traditional teaching, and who possess expertise in traditional, historical, and/or contemporary Indigenous Education, Indigenous languages, or other specializations that lead to the creation of effective learning environments supporting Indigenous cultures, identities, languages, and student success. A valid teacher\xe2\x80\x99s certificate, experience teaching in regular or alternative classroom settings, experience teaching Indigenous learners, and/or a familiarity with Manitoba curriculum would be considered assets.
The successful candidate should have strong potential for an active research program leading to external research funding. Candidates should have an understanding of the specific ethical and protocol considerations regarding research with and about Indigenous peoples, including OCAP and community-based relational obligations. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to program, Faculty, University, and community service. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to understanding systemic inequalities and work from a social justice framework.
Subject to budgetary approval, the appointment will take effect on July 1, 2023, or as soon afterward as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
