Teacher Librarian


The Library Learning Commons (LLC) is a dynamic, versatile space developed within the school community to support engaging opportunities for learning. In the LLC, students, Teacher Librarians and educators work collaboratively to promote literacy, integrate technologies and further develop information literacies. The LLC is a place for learning and connection.


The Role of the Teacher Librarian:

To acquire resources appropriate to the learning community and works within a budget. To create and maintain a collection that reflects our diverse and inclusive schools including both the local and national Indigenous communities. To ensure access to information technologies. To select, manage and promote the effective use of resources. To implement strategies for literacy development and promote literature appreciation. To foster information literacy skills through effective and ethical use of print and digital resources within an inquiry-based model. To collaborate with educators to support student learning. To communicate with the school community regarding the ongoing vision for the LLC. To create and maintain a virtual space to engage students with the LLC.

The Teacher Librarian:

Displays a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. Develops curricula that integrates information literacy and technologies. Promotes the role of the LLC in improving student engagement, learning achievement and success. Provides leadership in the school community through the promotion of new resources and digital literacies. Promotes the LLC as an innovative learning center of the school where all learners belong.

Guiding Principles for Elementary Teacher Librarians:

Schedules should be collaboratively created with administration and Teacher Librarians Schedules should provide the Teacher Librarian with appropriate time to manage the LLC and their individual prep time (prep time for the TL shouldn't be less than 30-minute blocks) Collaboratively schedule administration time in meaningful allocations of time 80% (subject to change) allocated to providing preparation to teachers Based on a 1475 minutes of instructional time per week (1.0 FTE) 1180 minutes of Teacher Librarian instructional time (prep relief to teachers through the LLC) 120 minutes of prep (no students - protected time) 175 minutes of administration time Through the collaborative process with teachers, Teacher Librarians may provide assessments. Access to and activities held within the LLC during instructional time will be collaboratively decided by administration and Teacher Librarians Secondary and Elementary Teacher Librarians must receive their prep time according to the collective agreement.
