Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

Our Team

The environment team at Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay and Long Harbour is part of the broader Canadian Environment Team, supporting operations to ensure regulatory compliance, the implementation of best practices and management of all environmental risks and critical controls. The team also administers the ISO14001 system and provides audit and technical support.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Superintendent, Environment to join our Vale Newfoundland and Labrador Operations. This permanent position will be on a 4x10s schedule (Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday) working at the Long Harbour Operations site in Long Harbour, NL. While this role will be primarily based at our Long Harbour Operations, frequent travel to our Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay Mine Site will also be required.

As Superintendent, Environment of the VNL Operations, you will manage a team of technical individuals that provides both support and services to the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay and Long Harbour Operations related to the natural environment. The main components of the work consist of maintaining regulatory compliance, developing systems and programs to manage environmental requirements, assisting with continual environmental improvement initiatives, and developing effective external relationships through outreach efforts to support VNL Operations and Corporate business goals. The primary focus of the work is the management of environmental risk and compliance obligations, environmental assessment/characterization, management of various community commitments and relationships including those with the Innu Nation and Nunatsaivut Government and the town of Long Harbour, and local Fishers etc, and coordinate all environmental permitting for the VNL operations and VBME project.

In this position, you will:

  • Develop and maintain an ISO 14001 environmental management system in alignment with all Canadian sites.
  • Evaluate and communicate the environmental risks within the business, and audit to ensure appropriate controls are in place.
  • Plan, scope and manage studies to assess environmental impacts (surface and groundwater, species at risk, biological etc.).
  • Act as point of contact with Government agencies, and act as a company representative with communities of interest and Innu Nation and Nunatsaivut Government.
  • Anticipate, evaluate, and influence environmental regulatory direction.
  • Manage environmental reporting and monitoring requirements, environmental permitting activities, and environmental improvement and research projects, with a focus on water and energy conservation.
  • Supervise and develop an effective (full-time) work team, assign and schedule work, provide advice and direction, establish work standards, monitor work quality/quantity, make hiring/promotion recommendations, appraise work of subordinates, handle disciplinary matters.
  • Provide support to operations and capital projects groups to improve environmental performance.
  • Develop and manage department budgets and forecasts (annual and 5-yr plan).
  • Facilitate the implementation of programs and reporting initiatives such as ISO14001, NPRI, Environmental Emergencies (E2 plans), GRI, TSM, GHG etc.
About You

Education:
  • An undergraduate degree in science (chemistry/biology/environmental) or engineering (environmental, water resources, etc) is required.
  • Certified environmental practitioner or professional engineer preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a similar role.
Skills:
  • Knowledge of technical material in a professional discipline related to environment.
  • Extensive experience and capability gained through in-depth involvement in the environment field.
  • Leadership and managerial skills.
  • Ability to work independently to achieve business results in accordance with approved plans and objectives.
  • Ability to work towards objectives using only a framework of practices and procedures for the work involved, where issues vary considerably and finding solutions normally requires interpretive and constructive thinking.
