Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Learning & Development team supports our stakeholders by providing onboarding, functional training, and safety training opportunities. We also work to develop new apprentices and support a Mine Beginner Program and JRTP to engage our local communities and bring in talent we can train to do the work required in our operations.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a VNL Superintendent, Learning & Development to join our Human Resources department in St. John\xe2\x80\x99s, NL. This is a permanent position with frequent travel to both Long Harbour and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay.

As a Learning and Development Superintendent of VNL you will support the Human Resources Manager in achieving established goals and objectives through continuous improvement. This role supports the alignment and implementation of both regional and local Learning and Development objectives for Vale Newfoundland and Labrador, providing oversight and support to both Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay and Long Harbour Operations.

This position will work collaboratively with other Managers, Superintendents, and Supervisors within cross functional areas of Newfoundland & Labrador. The L&D Superintendent effectively administers approved training plans through the management of their team and other resources, in turn meeting the current and future training needs of the operations.

The incumbent will also gain a deeper understanding of our company and our sustainable approach to mining and processing via exposure to other Vale operations in Canada and our global headquarters in Brazil.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Ensure Long Harbour and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay Operations meet all L&D requirements with regards to legislated regulations, company policies and standards;
  • Promote and monitor compliance with L&D services;
  • Provide advice and guidance to line management on given L&D related issues;
  • Source, acquire and coordinate external trainers to deliver specialized training which the operational trainers are unable to deliver;
  • Participation on government and community committees fostering the skills development of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to meet our industries human resource needs;
  • Actively drive training responsibility through line management and employees while supervising, auditing, providing expertise and advice;
  • Collaboratively work with the Production Area and Personnel Star point office to ensure Processing Plant Technicians are trained as per the Training Management System;
  • Create routines and processes with departmental managers and superintendents on a regular basis to determine if their training needs are met and develop and implement training plans to continue meeting their requirements;
  • Monitor departmental training budgets. Responsible for input to budget preparation, monitoring the budget, and making decisions on the appropriateness of upcoming projects and improvements;
  • Continuously review and update Long Harbour Operations and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay training programs in collaboration with North Atlantic content development team to ensure content is current and follows a consistent format and structure;
  • Ensure Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay and Long Harbour Operations training reports and requests for information are completed for the purpose of compliance to government regulations and corporate standards;
  • Coordinate vacation schedules for staff personnel within their area(s) of responsibility.
About You

Education:
  • Post-secondary education in a technicians/technologist\xe2\x80\x99s program is required.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a similar role is required.
Skills:
  • Knowledge of training systems.
  • Understanding of Mines and Surface operations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the equal systems (creating and maintaining training codes)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Ministry of Training requirements. (MTCU)
  • Knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
