Role Summary
A Day Camp leader is primarily responsible for the well-being and safety of youth participants wile at camp. They coordinate engaging activities for the campers, develop new programs, and supervise campers to make sure they are safe and happy. The most important of all the duties is to ensure campers are safe at all times. Being reliable and able to build good relationships with children are two essential traits for this role.
Duties/Responsibilities
• Be an effective role model to campers. This includes but is not limited to:
• Living the vision, mission, and values of Scouts Canada
• Respectful treatment of all campers/staff
• Compliance with all rules/regulations
• Appropriate communication and interactions prior to, during and after camp
• Maintaining a clean & safe work/living environment and general behavior throughout the employment period
• Displaying enthusiasm for activities, personal cleanliness, dress, speech, manners, and positive relations with campers/staff.
• Supervising young campers at all times
• Leading recreational and educational activities (such as swimming, or crafting)
• Ensuring camping equipment is used correctly
• Planning outdoor activities or sports for groups of campers
• Creating weekly or daily schedules taking into account children's age groups and interests
• Escorting and overseeing children
• Educating campers through games and explorations
• Setting up and maintaining equipment (like camping sets)
• Resolving occasional fights between children and addressing behavioral issues
• Making sure all safety rules are followed
• Ensuring camping site is clean and that campers don't litter recreational areas or nature
• Performing first aid or taking care of injuries as needed
• Communicating with parents/guardians as needed to update on camper progress
• Keeping accurate incident logs
Qualifications
• Standard First Aid with CPR Certification.
• Completes Scouts Canada screening process including a clear Police Records Check, with Vulnerable sector check and all required training by the date provided by the Summer Camp Director.
Preferred Skills
• Embodies personal beliefs in keeping with the Mission, Principles & Practices of Scouts Canada.
• Proven leadership, teamwork, planning & administrative abilities.
• Strong communication & customer service skills.
• Experienced in working in a camp environment.
• Ability to follow instructions
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team
