Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Science & Management, the Studio Technician ? Fine Arts provides technical support to the delivery of curriculum and assists students in developing and articulating technical skills in the areas of Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, and Photography by providing original technical instruction.

The Lab Technician is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College, incorporating and practicing the values in everything they do.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates to students the safe and appropriate use and application of equipment, tools, materials, techniques and processes.
  • Advise students in solving technical problems.
  • Maintains area studios, workshops, tools and equipment.
  • Monitors budgets, maintains and orders supplies and maintains records for the work area.
  • Researches new equipment, products, materials and processes.
  • Provides technical input into curriculum as required.
  • Participates as a member of various committees.
  • May hire, train, and/or supervise student workers and junior technical staff.
  • Ensures the general security of the areas of Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking.
  • Assists faculty with the planning and preparation of the graduation show.
  • Provides original and follow-up technical instruction to students in various processes and techniques related to Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking.
  • Plans, prepares, schedules and delivers technical workshops and demonstrations for students. Prepares technical notes for demonstrated procedures.
  • Ensures a safe working and learning environment by adhering to WHMIS, WCB Regulations, and by following the college?s occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Maintains required MSDS sheets applicable to the materials used by Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking students and faculty. Sets up and monitors a hazardous materials disposal program. Assists the Department Chair to create or modify safety procedures.
  • Ensures the general cleanliness, safety and security of the areas, including all Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking studios and shops.
  • Liaise with Studio Technician?Fine Arts (Digital Visual Arts, Design and Photography) on all technical crossover issues that arise for students or faculty within the department.
  • Monitors equipment use in the shops and studios. Maintains equipment according to manufacturer?s standards. Troubleshoots, diagnoses equipment problems, and repairs equipment or sends out for service as required. Conducts a regular inventory of and maintains and repairs studio furniture.
  • Liaises with the Manager, Facilities Operations regarding student first aid, student security, equipment security, space use, and storage of equipment and furniture.
  • Organizes and prepares studios for classes and for use by students and faculty in accordance with curriculum requirements.
  • In consultation with the Department Chair, prepares budgets for the Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking areas, researches and orders materials and monitors the stock of materials as necessary to support the operation of the shops and studios in these areas.
  • Researches capital expenditures and makes recommendations to the Department Chair and the Dean. Orders capital equipment and plans the installation of the same, coordinating with Facilities as required. Installs some equipment independently. May construct equipment when appropriate.
  • Maintains a sign-in and booking system to provide equitable student access to equipment and/or access to technician for assistance as directed by supervisor.
  • Monitors ceramics resale account and student buying account as directed by Department Chair, and submits reports and recommendations as required.
  • Supervises Lab Assistants performing tasks related to Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking curriculum. Hires, trains, assigns work and supervises student monitors.
  • Participates in the graduation show by constructing exhibition space, assisting faculty with planning and preparation, and setting up and dismantling the show.
  • Attends meetings as required by the Department Chair, researching, preparing and presenting information as requested.
  • Maintains currency in developments in art education and area(s) of expertise. Keeps a small library of technical information.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the supervisor.



Required Education & Experience
  • University or art school degree or diploma, and at least three years direct experience in a comparable technical position in a post-secondary institution, or equivalent level of education and/or experience.
  • Considerable practical experience with all equipment, materials and techniques related to contemporary Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking practices.



Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively the fundamental characteristics and processes in Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking studios.
  • Ability to demonstrate, and supervise in, the safe use of all equipment used in Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking areas.
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, email and Internet software used for communication, budget control, inventory and research.
  • Supervisory skills and the ability to make decisions with considerable independence within policies and guidelines.
  • OFA Level One and WHMIS training.
  • Good physical condition with ability to lift and carry 22 kg.
