Description*
The primary objective of the Pulp and Paper Manufacturing team is to improve the economic performance of industry by developing pathways that increase competitiveness while supporting industry transition and implementation of new technologies.
The Thermal Process Group is expected to maximize the value derived from the industry by improving chemical recovery operations and optimizing recovery and power boiler operations to produce heat, steam and electricity in existing plants, address emission and operational issues, as well as exploring the application of new bio-energy technologies and product opportunities to enable the industry to lower its carbon footprint.
Reporting to the Manager, Thermal Process, the individual will have a strong background in the areas of combustion and emissions control, multiphase thermodynamics, and process engineering to develop creative solutions for industry, help provide technical oversight to the team as well as help industry adopt and apply innovative, high value research products.

Responsibilities*
  • Design, plan and execute research projects and contracts that create new knowledge influential to industry and that meet the needs of our member companies and other clients
  • Help mentor and guide a team of research engineers, scientists and technologists in research and development activities
  • Adopt and encourage a business culture within the team that embraces innovation, safety, financial responsibility, efficient use of resources, and timely delivery of research products and contracts
  • Anticipate and identify current and emerging trends, market opportunities and long-term needs/expectations for the sector and propose solutions based on in-depth knowledge of science and its application
  • Work with companies involved in the commercialization of processes and publish findings (scientific or professional) that influence the industry

Qualifications*
  • An advanced degree in chemical engineering or related science (Ph.D. strongly preferred), with a strong background in the areas of combustion and emissions control, multiphase thermodynamics, and process engineering
  • Five to ten years\xe2\x80\x99 research experience in both laboratory and industrial settings, preferably working on combustion or thermochemical-related projects, including a record of scientific publication in these areas.
  • Hands-on experience in industrial process plants, particularly with boilers and other combustion equipment, would be a strong asset

  • Demonstrated collaboration and mentorship skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively manage project budgets, resources, and timely delivery of results
  • A high degree of comfort and proficiency using basic hand tools and the willingness and ability to perform manual labour as part of field and project work (eg taking samples, fixing or inspecting equipment etc.)
  • Able to travel extensively across North America and to work in industrial environments required
  • Excellent problem solver, highly creatve and innovative, with entrepreneurial drive and strong work ethic
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) with high standards for quality; similar skills in French would be desirable.
