Operating since 1984, this site specializes in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of a broad portfolio of innovative LED and Lamp technology. The Toronto facility serves a variety of markets such as electronics, optoelectronics, digital printing, general assembly, coatings, and medical device manufacturing, as well as endoscopy, bioscience research, microscopy and instrumentation. We are presently seeking a Sr. Optical Engineer who will design high performance biomedical and industrial optical illumination systems from concept through to commercial release. It is the responsibility of the Sr. Optical Engineer to provide technical leadership to a cross functional team including product managers, engineers, and scientists to deliver a product that meets commercial and regulatory requirements. The incumbent will apply both theoretical and practical knowledge of optical systems, lasers, LEDs, and thermal management to evaluate the feasibility of advanced concepts, design prototype systems and bring new technology to market. Time-to-market is critical; the Sr. Optical Engineer must move fluidly from the big picture to the smallest detail, removing road-blocks to drive momentum. The role demands a well-rounded technical background, a passion for innovation, confidence to take on challenging problems and agility to recover quickly and change course. A successful Sr. Optical Engineer will be energetic, embrace new technology and be creative in their approach to solving problems. Responsibilities:
  • Design optical systems using simulation tools, empirical methods and experimentation for all new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives to meet commercial and customer specifications. Optimize proposed design for enhanced optical performance e.g. increased coupling efficiency, uniformity and optical power using ray-tracing software such as LightTools and/or Zemax.
  • Stay up to date with state-of-the-art optical technologies, new approaches to optimize performance of standard products, and approaches to address special applications for gaining competitive advantage in market. Investigate and test new light sources including LEDs and lasers that could satisfy customer requirements and aid in developing new markets for Excelitas. Carry out new product feasibilities and communicate recommendations for design proposal & statement of work.
  • Provide thought leadership to the Optical Engineering team in designing prototypes to test new concepts and transfer technology into new and existing products. Systems will typically include LEDs, lasers, optical components, thermal management and electronics controls. Prototype design may also include commercial considerations related to functionality, safety and cost.
  • Perform optical testing and calibration for characterizing engineering prototypes to evaluate optical and system level performance against specifications and/or suggest avenues of improvement.
  • Determine specifications and develop test protocols for verification/qualification of optical components and systems. Prepare, review and approve all technical reports during the design development process of new products, such as optical design, test report, analysis, technical notes, drawings, specifications, etc.. Keep accurate records and drawings of development activities in PLM database as required by ISO certification.
  • Lead, contribute to, and participate in design reviews. Work with cross-functional design teams and thoroughly assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including manufacturability.
  • Research on product issues discovered by QA or product support; lend expertise in developing a solution through problem solving and risk analysis techniques to address both technical and project management concerns. Apply project management principles to define deliverables, schedules, cost and track progress.
  • Lead technical discussions with customers as well as fabrication and manufacturing partners. Act as technical liaison between customers and suppliers on all matters related to optical disciplines, as they relate to the design and development process.
  • Guide and supervise technicians, other engineers and interns, as needed, in carrying out various validation or qualification activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • 6-8 years industrial experience in product development environment
  • Minimum: B.Sc. or B.A.Sc. in Physics, Optical Engineering or related discipline.
  • A.Sc. or M.Sc. in Optical Physics or Optical Engineering (from recognized educational institutions) is desired.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of optical metrology equipment and techniques.
  • Proficiency in a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, Python, etc.) for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience with an optical design software such as Zemax , Light tools, Code V and ASAP is required.
  • Knowledge of any mechanical, thermal design tool is an asset.
  • Proven track record as an innovative and resourceful problem solver.
  • Team player with the ability to work in a faced-paced multi-disciplined product development environment.
  • Excellent leadership and organizing skills.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills for report writing, documentation etc.
  • Experience working in an ISO9001, 14001, 13485 certified, and/or FDA QSR compliant environment is an asset.
