Our Team

The North Atlantic Long Term Geology Central Support team supports all underground and near mine exploration activities. Our team is focused on providing quality and timely geological inputs and resource estimates to support the long range mine design and mid-range planning processes.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Geologist, Local 2020-05 to join our Sudbury Operations.

The purpose of this role is to provide geological support with respect to Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) of assay and drilling/logging database for the Vale Ontario Operations mines supporting the mineral reserve and resource base and the proper execution of Life of Mine plan.

The Senior Geologist will also help support and mentor junior employees that work in the Core Logging Facility.

Accountabilities

  • Follow departmental safety program.
  • Provide database administrative support for the Ontario Mines Geology departments and In-Mines Exploration for the drillhole database applications included in the Vale Ontario Operations Geological Systems, specifically MEBS (Mines Exploration Bore Hole System) and LIMS (Laboratory Information System) sampling system.
  • Monitor the systems and provide clear, concise communication with Vale IT to mitigate user issues and continuous improvement / development.
  • Assist with implementation of new diamond drill logging platform and training of mines personnel.
  • Daily QA/QC tasks like monitoring selection and results of control samples using multi-element test and follow-up with the assay labs on any failure.
  • Receipt of sample pulps from the primary lab, insertion of control samples and sending them to the secondary lab; monitor the results.
  • Data validation exercise on monthly basis to identify any data integrity issues or logging / sampling quality issue. Suggest remedy check and re-check data up until resolution. Provide feedback to the geologists on logging and sampling quality indicators.
  • Regularly monitor, communicate with and review (visit) the minerals sample preparation facility (specifically with respect to all assay results, QC sample results and re-assay requests, analytical invoices, sample storage and regular disposal).
  • Assist with MRMR documentation of annual mineral resources and mineral reserves inventory and transactions.
  • Provide core logging, sampling, QAQC support at the Stobie Core Logging Facility.
  • Identify, analyze and recommend opportunities for safety, productivity and cost improvements.
  • Occasional underground travel may be required to visit drill.
  • Current schedule is 5 days per week Monday to Friday 6:30am-3:00pm (excluding recognized holidays).
  • Communicate observed and potential safety hazards to mine supervision.
  • Research, recommend and support implementation of new projects to improve technological advancements in the work conducted by the team.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior employees.
  • Carry out specific accountabilities as assigned by the Chief Geologist.
About You

Education:

The successful candidate will possess at a minimum, a Geological diploma, B.Sc Geology or B.Sc Geological Engineering.

Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five years of progressive relevant experience in an underground mining environment.

Skills:
  • Advanced understanding and knowledge of Vale Ontario Operations Geological Systems including: MEBS (Mines Exploration Bore Hole System), MRM (Mineral Resource Management database and reporting system including Mineability and Dilution), AMGC (All Mines Grade Control), Diamond Drill Hole Layouts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Advanced understanding and proficiency with DatamineR StudioRM software to process, visualize and interpret 3D geological data for modelling and grade interpolation.
  • Knowledge of Mining, Milling and Refining Processes.
