ABOUT THE ROLE

We are growing our TransAlta team in Calgary, Alberta! We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, and interpersonal individual to join our Canadian Growth group.

  • Do you have at least 5 years of experience in wind energy development?
  • Do you have a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in engineering?
  • Are you a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta?
  • Do you reside in Calgary?

TransAlta has ambitious growth goals and is targeting 2 GW of additional renewable generation growth by 2025, a $3 billion dollar investment plan. TransAlta currently has a Canadian pipeline of over ten wind projects with a gross capacity of over 1400 MWs. Publicly announced projects can be found here.
As Senior Wind Development Engineer, you will be a key part of a team that is developing TransAlta\xe2\x80\x99s Canadian Wind portfolio from the early prospecting stage all the way through to a final investment decision. Your role will be to take ownership of the technical aspects of the development which includes prospective siting of facilities, resource evaluation, development of an optimized and compliant layout, supporting regulatory process progression, selection of turbines and other key components, and initial capital and operating cost estimates.
As an integral player on the Canadian Growth team, you will collaborate internally with corporate groups such as: Land, Environment, Insurance, Accounting, Construction, and Legal.
This is a full-time salaried position is based out of our office in Calgary, Alberta with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule (days in the office and days at home).
WHAT YOU WILL DO

As the Senior Wind Development Engineer, Canada, you will:

  • Manage technical development of wind generation projects across Canada from inception through to final investment decision
    • There may also be opportunities to support energy Storage and Solar generation projects
  • Prospect new development opportunities through \xe2\x80\x9cArea of Interest\xe2\x80\x9d identification and ranking
  • Develop site technical layouts in compliance with local environmental and regulatory constraints
  • Select the optimal technologies for the projects wind regime and economic factors
  • Support the environmental and regulatory permitting processes
  • Manage grid interconnection requirements for renewable energy projects
  • Provide input into negotiations of:
    • power supply agreements,
    • EPC/EPCM agreements,
    • equipment supply agreements
  • Maintain good customer, partner and supplier relationships
  • Assist in the preparation of bid packages
  • Review \xe2\x80\x9crequest for proposal\xe2\x80\x9d documents for renewable energy projects
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry
  • Provide due diligence for potential acquisitions involving facilities completed or under construction; reviewing technical risks of construction, capital and operating estimates, and operational and performance data, reports and contracts
  • Support the continued development and improvement of TransAlta\xe2\x80\x99s internal tools and processes
  • Mentor junior colleges to expand our internal capabilities and development capacity

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:
  • Ten or more years of experience in the power generation industry with 5 years of direct experience in wind generation development
  • A Bachelors Degree in engineering
  • Understanding of renewable project development and construction
  • A basic understanding of wind and solar project economics and optimization
  • Expertise in specialized software for renewable projects (WAsP, WindPRO, ArcGIS, etc.) [KH1] as well as skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Ability to manage and manipulate GIS data layers for prospecting and layout development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wind power equipment and its performance
  • The candidate will become knowledgeable in many technologies including solar plants, battery energy storage systems and all types of renewables
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements
