ABOUT THE ROLE

We are currently looking to hire a Senior Engineer, Renewable Development to join our Growth team. Reporting directly to the Manager, Development Engineering, this position is an integral player on the Canadian Growth team and will interact internally with corporate groups such as: Land, Insurance, Accounting, Construction, and Legal. This permanent full-time salaried position is based out of our office in Calgary, Alberta with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As the Senior Engineer, Renewable Development, Canadian Growth, you will:

  • Develop optimum economic and technical power plant configurations to meet TransAlta and customer requirements
  • Perform complete life cycle cost analysis of project alternatives (equipment selection, wind turbine siting, turbine type, wake losses, environmental / stakeholder / landowner constraints, collection system and substation layout)
  • Prepare AACE Class 5 and 4 capital cost estimates, O&M estimates, performance, schedule estimates, preliminary Design Basis Memorandum or Functional Specifications for use by EPC(M) contractors
  • Provide support to Project Manager as well as leadership and guidance to projects in design, construction, commissioning, and testing assisting the EPC/ EPCM develop a detailed Design Basis Memorandum and specifications, Class 3 cost estimate, support major equipment bidding and purchase contracting and Long-Term Service Agreement negotiation
  • Manage technical development of new: Wind, Battery Energy Storage Systems and Solar projects from inception through final investment decision
  • Micro site Wind turbine layouts
  • Assist in the preparation of bid packages and support the environmental permitting process
  • Manage grid interconnection requirements for renewable energy projects
  • Provide input into negotiations of power supply agreements, EPC/EPCM agreements, turbine supply agreements and PV panel purchase agreements
  • Review request for proposal documents for renewable energy projects
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry and evaluate renewable energy technologies for best economics
  • Provide due diligence for potential acquisitions involving facilities completed or under construction, reviewing technical risks of construction, capital and operating estimates, and operational and performance data, reports and contracts

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:
  • Ten or more years of direct experience in Wind and Solar development engineering
  • A bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in engineering
  • Understanding of renewable project development and construction
  • Expert in specialized software for Wind projects (WAsP, WindPRO, PVSyst, ArcGIS, etc.) as well as skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wind plant equipment and its performance
  • The candidate will become knowledgeable in many technologies including solar plants, battery energy storage systems and all types of renewables
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

The following qualifications and/or experience are desirable, but not essential:
  • Ability to travel
  • Valid driver\'s license
  • A basic understanding of wind project economics and optimization would be a plus
