Senior Engineer, System Safety

The Senior Engineer - System Safety supports the development, coordination, conduct and reporting of commercial and military ship safety cases for ships under construction at VSY. Functional attributes within scope include, but are not limited to, structure, stability, engineering systems, fire safety, escape evacuation and rescue, radio-communications, safety of navigation, dangerous goods, RADHAZ, environmental. Additional responsibilities include the review of early design concepts and contracts to define and recommend modifications to designs in order to achieve required safety results, identifies and eliminates safety hazards in support of multiple vessel programs at different stages of development and production to achieve product delivery in support of program schedule. The Senior Engineer - System Safety also ensures that corrective measures and risks meet acceptable safety standards for human interaction; analysis of planning documents and implements established VSY safety engineering programs to achieve company and customer requirements; responsible for the implementation of safe operation and test policies with regard to safety and overseeing areas of risk involving hazardous operations. The position works with the Principal Engineer – System Safety Duties/Accountabilities
  • Provides discipline expertise in all areas of Systems Safety Engineering
  • Develop ship safety cases/reports to support programs from concept, through production and to delivery
  • Develops and/or reviews relevant specifications and design documents in order to achieve customer, classification society and regulatory approval.
  • Supports the Director, Technical Assurance’s mandate for the improvement of overall governance processes of systems engineering.
  • Provides mentoring and technical advice within the Safety Engineering team to the VSY Engineering Department.
  • To deputize for the Principal Engineer – System Safety in their absence.
Education and Experience
  • Degree in an Engineering Subject area or equivalent.
  • 5 or more years post-secondary experience working in the Marine sector or Engineering field is vital.
  • A minimum of 3 years of systems safety engineering experience is preferred.
  • 3 years’ experience working on projects involving diverse collaborators.
  • Professional Engineer status in BC or the ability to achieve this within 12 months is preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
  • Experience in performing and facilitating complex System Safety analyses such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Risk Hazard Index (RHI), etc. assessments is required.
  • Experience in creating safety mitigation strategies as part of a multi discipline engineering team is required.
  • Solid understanding of FMEA approach to identifying single points of failure.
  • Experience in creating safety related plans and analysis documents in support of creation of a vessel safety case is preferred.
  • Demonstrated application of Classification Society Rules and marine Regulatory Framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Ability analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment, multi-task and prioritize.
  • Availability and willingness for travel.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws and all the employer's safety policies and rules.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Exercise good judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
  • A solid understanding of Risk Management software would be advantageous.
