Silp Human Services Counsellor (summer Student)

Job Description

Our SILP program is looking for an enthusiastic student to work as Human Services Counselor for summer placement. If you are passionate about helping others and believe that everyone has potential, we would love to hear from you.

This position is for 8 weeks between June to August.



To be eligible, candidate must:

be between 19 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period


be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the

Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

for the duration of the employment

and

have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations




International students are not eligible participants. As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide support with making healthy food choices. Assist clients in making healthy meals. Support with maintaining good personal hygiene. Help clients set goals and help set them on a path to achieve them. Assist in learning independent living skills. Support with medication. Assist with budgeting and banking. Assist with personal shopping (clothing, sundries, family gifts, etc.). Set up appointments with medical professionals as necessary. Plan various outings that pertain to client interests. Help clients to learn new life skills. Provide emotional support as needed. Assisting clients in establishing and maintaining good communication with family. Provide advice/support to clients as needed. Utilize community resources (transportation, activities, medical, etc.). Ensure client safety. Document all data from each visit on client visit sheets. Update health logs for clients after each medical appointment. Keep track of any money that's in client pouches. Constantly update client's financial records and keep track of any money that's in client pouches.

Required skills and qualifications.

Preference will be given to candidates studying in the field of Human Services, Psychology, Social work. Only students currently studying in college or university are eligible. First-Aid and CPR certificate is an asset. Clear SD check and criminal record check. Good knowledge of social media. Valid driver's license and use of a personal car daily. Ability/willingness to drive clients. Strong spoken and written English skills are essential. Ability to write reports independently. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work independently with excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends. Consistent work performance and attendance. Excellent people skills.

Monday- Friday (Day/Evening)

35 hours/week
