Job Description

SFU's Student Temporary Pool provides temporary clerical, secretarial and technical support for up to 3 months to departments across all 3 campuses (Burnaby, Vancouver, and Surrey) during periods of absence, work overload or for special projects.

Who is eligible?

Qualified SFU students registered in credit courses in the semester of employment will be eligible to apply for the Student Temporary Pool. SFU students are given priority in hiring for temporary part-time clerical, secretarial and technical positions in the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3338 employee group throughout the University.

The Student Temporary Pool is a great way to gain work experience in the Post-Secondary Education Sector with one of BC's Top Employers. It will provide you the opportunity to work in many diverse assignments while continuing your studies. Assignments are flexible and students can accept assignments on a one by one basis. Assignments are part-time, less than 35 hours weekly; however, students in the pool should typically be available for a minimum of 3, 3-hour shifts per week.

Each assignment will differ in the work performed, however, typical temporary work includes:

  • Cashier work
  • Customer service
  • Data entry
  • Reception
  • Desktop publishing
  • Web design
  • Technical
  • Library clerical
  • General clerical, e.g: mail-outs, filing, etc.
The qualifications for each assignment will vary based on the role, but employees must meet the following:
  • Excellent customer service skill
  • Ability to operate an electronic cash register
  • Software skills (e.g.: Word, Excel, Filemaker, PowerPoint, Electronic Mail, Access, Firefox/ Explorer) at a basic or intermediate level
  • Knowledge of PC and/or Macintosh platforms
  • 35 wpm keyboard skills with a high degree of accuracy
  • Good oral communication skill
  • General knowledge of office procedures and practices
  • Good organizational skill
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing office environments and assignment levels
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a high volume of work within deadlines
