Position Summary Reporting to the Manager, Undergraduate Office the Student Community & Engagement Specialist position is responsible for the leadership and development of student engagement and outreach activities for the Faculty of Business to ultimately support and enhance the student experience (and student success) and improve student retention. Responsibilities include planning and executing engagement and student outreach strategies for the Business Undergraduate Office and other faculty departments (when appropriate), including launching a peer mentorship program, and more broadly, development of a robust volunteer management strategy. This role focuses on developing and implementing student related events that cultivate engagement and improve retention; developing and executing student outreach plans that are used to engage Business students; and operates under a high degree of autonomy and discretion. This position creates awareness by building campaigns for Business students to increase student participation and executing long-term student outreach campaigns. It also coordinates the production and execution of activities and materials to target current students and elevate the overall reputation of Business. This position liaises with internal and external agencies and design teams for creative development to support student-focused initiatives. Duties
  • Develop programs and events that promote student success, retention and wellness, and cultivate a strong sense of community and promote student involvement within Business and the broader campus community
  • Organize and implement plans and activities for new student Orientation, including facilitating the participation of the department and divisional units. Provide oversight and overarching coordination/direction to the various cross-divisional components of Orientation execution
  • In collaboration with Manager, Undergraduate Office and other units in Business, organize and implement targeted orientation and ongoing engagement activities for various groups of students – e.g. direct entry students, post sec transfer students, international business students, internationalization of domestic students, etc.
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager, Undergraduate Office, as well as leadership and staff in the CWIL Office to support Undergraduate Office-led initiatives that would benefit from the collaboration of the faculty’s student groups
  • Works closely with colleagues who focus in the areas of Indigenous and international engagement, supporting their activities and developing events and activities that may focus on these unique portfolio needs and/or expands to the full faculty/student population
  • In collaboration with Residence Services, leads exploration of opportunities to engage Business students living in campus residence
  • Develop strong partnerships with Business departments – e.g. 4 academic departments (ABA, Finance, MBEL, SEM), CWIL Office, other program areas (MBA, PhD), Alumni Engagement, academic centres, etc. - to promote participation, engagement and wellness opportunities
  • Works to facilitate connections and conversations between students, Faculty, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and other University units to build trusting relationships and collaborate on initiatives as applicable.
  • Creates unique and specialized programs and activities that can support the large and diverse student population, including working closely with colleagues in the areas of international and Indigenous engagement.
  • Develop a proposal to create, implement, and maintain a student mentorship program. Once approved, this role will be responsible for implementing the mentorship program, the content, logistics, hiring, training and running of the student mentors and the program
  • Provides content and updates to the Business website, specifically related to the Student Services and academic programs areas; works with Communications & Marketing Service Partner and/or contract communications professionals in any larger scale website revisions
  • Contribute to the creation of social media/digital marketing targeted for current Business students, working collaboratively with the Communications & Marketing Service Partner.
  • Create and implement outreach events and programming that maximize the reach and reputation of the Business Undergraduate Office unit
  • Recruits, trains/onboards, manages, and schedules a volunteer pool of 100+ volunteers annually for both one-off and ongoing programs and events related to the Undergraduate Office, including, but not limited to, Alumni Weekend, Orientation, Open House, and other recruitment, engagement and community initiatives
  • Leverages volunteer strategy to resource new community and engagement initiatives in support of new vision and direction of Alberta School of Business and its growing student body
Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree. Degree focusing on communications preferred
  • Two to three years' experience in post-secondary student engagement/student services preferred
  • Computer proficiency in a Windows environment using MS Office applications, social media and Google applications; experience with website Content Management Systems (CMS) an asset
  • Strong written communication and creative writing skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal, consultation, and communication skills; experience with public speaking and understanding of cross-cultural communications (i.e. working with individuals from different social and cultural backgrounds)
  • Experience with project and event management; the ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Outcome oriented and high attention to detail and student experience
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines under pressure with a demanding workload.
