The Opportunity

The Senior Specialist, Process Safety is the subject matter expert and technical authority for the Base Metals business on matters pertaining to process safety management and related risks. The Senior Specialist defines the strategic objectives, associated prioritization, and implementation strategy for the operating assets. The Senior Specialist leads the delivery of the strategic objectives through local specialists/business partners, including the coordination and implementation throughout Base Metals.

Other accountabilities for this role include:

• Accountable for the definition, design, and deployment of priority business initiatives/projects directly associated with the achievement of the process safety management; such initiatives/projects span product groups, countries, operating and functional departments, and are associated with significant investment on the part of the business.
• Achieve the organization\xe2\x80\x99s strategic PSM objectives through the application of the risk management system, its associated processes and tools, in accordance with Vale\xe2\x80\x99s management model (VPS) \xe2\x80\x93 including the development/refinement of associated aspects. Establish and embed consistent practices across the portfolio that meet or exceed industry standards.
• Leading the application of risk assessment techniques/methodologies such as HIRA, Process Safety Management (events and classification) Elements and Management of Change.
• Provide guidance and insight to key decisions impacting the business.
• Lead the application of complex risk assessment techniques/methodologies and directly support senior leadership in risk-based decision making.

About You

Education:

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering
• Designated PEng considered asset
• Complementary advanced degrees (Masters, PhD) is preferable

Experience:

• 15+ years of experience in similar field
• Experience in management system design and implementation
• Experience managing a global portfolio of assets
• Experience in high-hazard operating environment

Skills:

• Deep understanding of organizational behaviour
• Aptitude for strategic decision making
• Strong capacity to think critically, make decisions and problem solve
• Ability to aptly prioritize work and workflows as well as multi-task
