What you will do

Let\xe2\x80\x99s do this. Let\xe2\x80\x99s change the world. In this vital role you will join our growing Biologics Therapeutic Discovery team in Burnaby. Job duties include the implementation of advanced mass spectrometry-based analytical and biophysical techniques for the characterization of reagent and therapeutic protein candidates supporting Amgen\xe2\x80\x99s early phase discovery programs.

Responsibilities:

This individual will oversee the protein characterization capability at our Burnaby site through daily collaboration with scientists in the Department of Protein Sciences and Antibody Discovery. They will also work closely with team members in South San Francisco and Thousand Oaks.

  • Perform intact and sub-unit protein mass analysis with appropriate enzymatic deglycosylation procedures to confirm protein identity supporting a variety of large molecule reagents and candidates.
  • Design and execute fit for purpose experiments to identify proteins, PTMs and glycan analysis, disulfide link characterization etc. using peptide mapping capabilities.
  • Explore and set up high throughput RPLC-MS/MS based protein foot-printing methods, such as, but not limited to HDX-MS and FPOP.
  • Oversee a walk-up protein mass spectrometer system (Open access TOF-MS system) and a UPLC SEC system used for site-wide protein purity measurements.
  • Train protein biochemistry staff on best practices in wet and dry lab procedures and assist with mass spectrometry data interpretation where necessary.
  • Explore existing and new technologies to aid protein characterization efforts through collaborations with local universities and companies.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree

Or

Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree and 4 years of scientific experience

Or

Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree and 6 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in protein characterization through use of intact mass analysis, glycan analysis, bottom up RPLC-MS/MS approaches and other biophysical measurements such as SEC, DSF and SEC MALS/QELLS.
  • Expertise in mass spectrometry based epitope mapping techniques such as HDX-MS, FPOP, crosslinking methods etc.
  • Experience in proteomics or protein expression or purification
  • Experience in Agilent TOFs and Thermo Orbitrap mass spectrometers along with Protein Metrics Inc. software is highly preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), and a consistent track record of academic accomplishments (i.e., peer-reviewed publications and/or patents)
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment
  • Deep understanding of protein production, post-translational modifications, glycosylation structures etc.
