Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
This research project will explore how new technology can be implemented into traditional workflow of the scenic designer for Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) production of Twelfth Night and Dry Cold Productions\xe2\x80\x99 musical, The Prom. The equipment and the concepts, especially augmented reality, to be investigated have been used widely in other fields such as architecture but have not been extensively explored in theatre design.
The research assistant will support the pre-production stages of two theatre designs by creating and maintaining paperwork and provide support for researching the visuals of the production. Generated in Vectorworks Spotlight, the research assistant will help to build virtual models used for both augmented reality scenarios and the 3D printed maquettes for two theatre productions opening in May and June. Supporting the designer during the rehearsal period by attending meetings, working with the production crew, and other tasks assisting in the creation of the design for both productions. The research assistant will be working at the University of Winnipeg Theatre Department, both theatre performance sites and remotely from home. Possible extension (with compensation) of this project might include a future 3rd production to explore Virtual Reality in the design process.
