Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

This position is for a Senior Research Assistant to work on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The successful candidate will be responsible for working on modelling and simulation of energy savings in WSNs using the concept of measurement prediction, as well as physically building WSNs to confirm the new methodology being developed.

Duties:

  • Develop and implement models and simulations for investigating the effect of new measurement prediction methods on the energy budget of sensor nodes.
  • Design and build a small-scale WSN to test the new methodology being developed.
  • Conduct experiments to validate the mathematical models and identify areas for improvement.
  • Analyze data and write a report detailing the findings of the research with the goal of publishing at a conference or journal.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor (or is close to graduation) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Strong foundation in mathematics/statistics
  • Experience with programming microcontrollers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico
  • Physical dexterity: This job may require the ability to work with small components, such as soldering electronic components, assembling and testing devices, and performing delicate work on printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Attention to detail: Paying close attention to details, ensuring accuracy in data collection and analysis, and identifying and correcting errors.
  • Organizational skills: Ability to organize data, files, and other information in a clear and logical manner for easy retrieval.
  • Problem-solving skills: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues that arise during research projects and come up with innovative solutions.
  • The optimal candidate will further have:
  • Experience with hardware implementation and soldering
  • Strong understanding of wireless communication protocols such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and LoRaWAN
  • Excellent communication skills, including technical writing and the ability to write scientific results and/or papers as well as presenting the research results (for example in an academic conference setting)
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from May 1, 2023 - August 31, 2023, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-340 hours.
